After a walk through hell (and still walking) called PPro & Decklink I´ll now upgrade my Avid license.
PPro will need so major improvements in many parts to be a reliable tool. And I don´t care if it´s “the fault of BMD or whoever”. It´s basic stuff like sync playback, codec handling, video monitoring, etc.
And I ran into loads of other stuff during work.
Maybe in CS6 PPro is more reliable and we´ll meet again.

It’ll get there. There are small things that tend to really annoy. But it’ll get there.

Be warned, BDM Hardware on Avid MC6 isn’t without issues either. Nothing big, but slight sluggishness and a couple others. Read the Avid forum for those issues.

Everyone wants AMA to work so they can edit natively. Everyone EXPECTS that. Avid still works best with Avid media. AMA to access…then transcode. Use AMA to access and start editing, but then transcode when you leave for the day and when you come back, you have Avid media and all is well.

Without the imperative need for what Avid MC has to offer, Im of a mind to leave transcoding behind as much as possible. Luckily, my Mac seems very capable with all the formats Ive used so far.The biggest treat so far is Red 4K on the timeline (color corrected even….) in real time playback 😀

Oh, I can get red to play back on the timeline via AMA in AVID. There are other formats that are a bit more demanding.

BUT…if you MUST have native editing capabilities, then PPro is the way to go. Other people need things that PPro can’t provide just yet. Like EASY mixing of audio on the timeline. PPro is so bad at that.

Actually, I found a great work around that fits my needs. I mix at a clip level.I just double click on the clip and create the key frames by numeric entry in the clips Effect Controls Panel. This is reflected on the timeline by Displaying Clip Key frames. Probably not as fast as the mixer GUI, but lots more accurate when I use it.

I know the Audio Mixer sliders appeal to many, but as you said, one of several audio short comings is that the mixer only affects the tracks. Any changes to timeline screws the mix up good.

TEDIOUS! I park the playhead on the tracks I want to adjust, gang the tracks I want to adjust, type in a number into the mixer (I rarely use the sliders, I hide them as a matter of fact)…also very accurate. But also able to adjust multiple tracks at once. Premiere is one track at a time.

None of the known NLEs is perfect – we all know that. We hope so, but meanwhile we need to look for the best working solution. And this could be a different product for each one of us because of the different needs and approaches to projects.
I´d like to see a stable and reliable PPro – right now, and with my latest projects in mind, PPro needs really a couple of “basic” stability (codec handling, codec mixing, BMD, etc. as already named…) improvements. I do not say MC is way better and there are no issues…no, but having worked with MC over ten years now I feel it has the best basic stability (I/O, machine control, etc.).
Adobe needs to prove their Pro statements – I hope they will, but right now I don´t have the time to wait until april/may when possibly the next update will come.
