You are right, Michael, although I think that exporting to Animation is not an option on FCPX.

That would be the most easy and effective way.
They can export a Prores444 file with the Alpha. The file will be very light because is just some pixels in white (letter) and the rest transparent.
Then you just need to put that clip on a layer on top of your video/interview. Nothing to do with mattes.
The only question is to know if Vegas can read the Prores444 stuff.

You may have de Canvas set to display the Alpha Channel.
Change it to RGB.
In the right one of the three buttons that are on to of the Canvas window.

Audacity, with the Lame library can make MP3 on Mac. Then you can add that audio to the original video track.
HandBrake can make MKVs.

When importing graphics to FC, you can manage the Gamma of those files.
Left-click the file on FCs Browser and open the “Items Properties”. Try Gamma 2.2
Remember that changes in the Browser do not affects the stuff that is already on the sequence.
After changing the Gamma, you must drag de graphic again to the time-line.

You are right Neil, but I don’t see feasible playing a 5 PCM channels (AIFF) + video file from a USB stick memory.

The PANAS do not make REAL p24.

As you say, Alex, in one side is a matter of taste, in the other also depends of the kind of footage we are dealing with.
What we agree on, is about that the best results comes from hardware conversion, and with the drop of the prices of the Teranex, that shouldn’t be prohibitive option anymore.

Since 2005, whenever I make a full install (from scratches, erased HD, step by step and repairing permissions after each piece of software is installed), and when everything (System with his updates + QT + FCS) before opening any application, I launch DiskWarrior.
Year after year I find that, after installation, always at least a 30% of the directories are “out of order”.
Its had happens to me in one occasion that after such a installation i couldn’t even launch FC.
please don’t think that I have any stake on the company that produce it, but I can’t stop advocating for that application. Is just that is the piece of software that has allowed me to survive on a place where there is not any kind of service for a mac user. The only piece of software that I recommend for any Mac user whatever hi use his computer for.

Beside “Next Frame” (repeating frames/linear) and “Frame Blending” for speed/time-base changes, Compressor has two more options based in Vector Interpolation (Optical Flow), but the truth is that this two options most of the time the only they get is to degrade the picture because they process every single frame. “Next Frame” (repeating frames/linear) is the faster and simplest, and quite often is the one that works better.
Repeating frames is not that bad. We do not see how frames are repeated when we see a Hollywood movie (24P) on a normal NTSC TV (29,98).You can try using directly the p23,97 stuff on a 29,98 sequence, BUT, to avoid frame blending, select the clips on the time-line and left click to access the “Speed Window”. Uncheck frame Blending.
About MPGStreamclip, in theory it shouldn’t blend frames, unless the you have the “Blend Frames” window checked.

Yes, “Frame Blending” is a a problem for Color Correction. If you are, for example, using masks to correct some Secondary, the masks will be spoiled in the blended frames.
