Encoding ac3 into .mov
Hello Guys,
I am an audio engineer from a small studio in Singapore. I’m not quite sure where to put this question, so forgive me if this is in the wrong place!!
I have recently completed a surround sound mix of a documentary. I used Apple’s Compressor to export an ac3 audio file, which I wanted to combine with the video file so I can hear how it sound on different 5.1 systems. I tried using FCP however it does not allow me to import an ac3 file.
Are there programs out there that lets me do that?
My aim is to have a video file that I can put on a USB stick, in order for me to move to different systems quickly.

I don’t know much about this, but i don’t think you can embed an AC3 on a QT file.
They are different formats. and they will need be packed together in a VOB or soemthing similar.
What you can do is to export a self contained movie from FC with all your audio channels and then, in Compressor or QT, export a QT movie with AAC audio. This allows different configurations for multi channel audio.

What about if instead of exporting an AC3 file from Compressor you exported an 5.1 AIFF file. This can then easily be imported into FCP and combined with a video file.

You are right Neil, but I don’t see feasible playing a 5 PCM channels (AIFF) + video file from a USB stick memory.

I successfully solved the problem by exporting the surround file into a .mov file, then combining it with FCP.
However my Panasonic home theater system only reads mp3, mkv or divx video files… Do you guys know what program can I use to convert the .mov into the formats above?

Audacity, with the Lame library can make MP3 on Mac. Then you can add that audio to the original video track.
HandBrake can make MKVs.

Ahh very good point Rafael, I was forgetting the USB stick limits. Still looks like between you and Brian you have fixed it which is great.

Hi guys! I’ve managed to solve the problem. So just gonna down list the steps I did for future reference!!!
1. Bounce out 6 mono files from 5.1 Mix.
2. Send to Apple Compressor, format is Quicktime Surround (.mov)
3. Send to Final Cut Pro, Surround Project, Export Media as H.264 .mov
4. Send to Handbrake, export out as mkv, Constant Frame rate, Ac3 Passthru.DONE!
