  • [Ian Soroka] “FCP cant recognize the Canopus as a deck,”
FC can’t recognize the canopus as a desk, because is not a desk.
With the Canopus you can capture through “Capture Now” only. You can’t log7capture because there is not Device Control.

First you should check if there is any problem with the FW connexion.

With the Canopus switched ON, open QT Player (no QT 10, but QT.7), and go to File > New Movie Recorder.
Selecting the Canopus as the source camera (QT Preferences) you should get the picture on the QT window.
If you don’t get the signal that way, probably there is a problem with the FW connexion.

FC.6.0 was the first version. It was full of bugs (FC.6.1 was released very short after) and lacking functions (no XDCAM support).
    Many reasons to update.

XDCAM stuff do not work through Log&Transfer.
You need at least FC.6.2 to manage XDCAM stuff.
Then you need to install some SONY software and you will be able to use the “XDCAM Import” function in FC.

Whatever the camera used, if the clips from the NANO are QT files (.mov), you don’t need to convert to edit. Those MPEG-2 are fully supported by FC (they are XDCAM) and work perfect on a native sequence, or on a Prores sequence.
If all the stuff is the same, edit native, and before exporting your master, change the sequence codec to Prores and check “Render in High Precision”.

[Isabella Vella] “Thanks for your advice. I tried your settings and coming out of FC my project is 1.3 GB and out of compressor is 2.64 GB. I thought compressor was supposed to reduce the size of a project file.
This is a small project with a few titles and transitions. About 2:40 in length.”

Isabella, you must have done something wrong.
With the setting I gave you (5.000Kbps data rate), you should be getting a file of around 90MB. A bit more because the audio.

This is how the compressor GUI must looks like:

BTW, don’t forget to compress the audio as AAC.

    A couple of things:
You are working with Interlaced media and that MUST be deinterlaced for the web.
Or you do it in FC (the default deinterlacing filter is not good), or you do it while compressing the H264. If you do it with QT Conversion, the deinterlacing will also be very crappy. You can try Compressor (Frame Control ON), or MPGStreamclip.

[Isabella Vella] ” the file is larger than the QT file exported from FCP7. THe QT file from FCP is 2.62 GB and the file compressed in .264 is 292 GB.
This is too large to upload to the web.”

[Isabella Vella] “compression settings: Compression Type: H.264; current frame rate, Data Rate: Automatic; Compression Quality at medium and high…”
You can NEVER leave “Data Rate AUTO”, because you have no control over the file size,
    Do like that:
    – Frame rate; Current.
    – Key-frames: AUTOMATIC
    – Best Quality: Multipass.
    – Then “Data Rate Restricted to..”, try 5.000Kbps to start. That will give you an acceptable quality and quite small file. You can rise the data rate up to you. 10/15.000Kbps will give a very good picture, and from that data rate up, the clip will look almost as hasn’t undergone any compression.

  • Partitions make sense if you need more than a copy of the operative system, but for storing media or any other kind of documents make no much sense.
Instead of making partitions, just make 2 folders with the name of the external drives and put inside the media on the drives. Final Cut is very good at reconnecting media. You won’t have problems.

May 23, 2013 at 5:33 am in reply to: Weird Pixelation Problem

You haven’t said which codec are you working with.
If you are working with DV, DVCPro25, HDV, AVCHD, or any other 420/411 codec, you will get pixelation (blockiness) because is in the nature of the codec.
If you are editing any of those codecs, try changing the sequence codec to prores
The second issue is the chroma of the reds you are applying. The chroma won’t produce the pixelation but the higher the saturation the most noticeable will be.

  • I’ve read of a PC application being able to export to PC (saw theyr web site), but I think is a bluff.
As far as I know, aside Macs, the only way to get Prores is on hardware (Cameras and external digital recorders).

The AVID codecs has been one of the method for interchanging footage from PC to Macs, but seems that there are big color/gamma issues on conversion.
I think the only way to avoid those issues would be using an application with proper color managing, like After Effects.
OK for converting a finished job, but no much practical if you have to convert footage.

  • As far as I know the only tapeless format which file/folder structure can be rebuilt is XDCAM.
    No AVCHD that I’m aware.
