    I work in some times in 10b and appart of the two internal harddrives of my G5 2x2Ghz, I use thre LaCie Firewire 400 (not journaled) I have not a single problem.

    Don’t forget what I sugested you. I’ve had the same problem (after hours rendering, and right when the rendering bar reachs the end: GENERAL ERROR!). Its happens even with brand new prjects and even having not problems with disk space at all.

    Hi Apple Annie,
    Try in the Users prefferences, and uncheck “Abort capture on dropped-frames”. A bit futher down set: “On Time-code breaks..”: Warn after capture. If you keep having problems, just put in play your device and hit the button “Now” in the Log & Capture window.

    FC renders in RGB, but if the footage is YCrCb (YUV exist inthe analog world) the color space conversion is unavoidable.
    And to pass from RGB to the any color space based in Luma and Color components (this in the digital and analog world as well) means to looss colors, because there are colors in the RGB spectrum that can not exist in the other color spaces (not the oposite, because ALL the colors of the YUV, YCR…belong to the RGB color space).
    Appart of that each codec do this conversion in adifferent way. As few people pointed before, there are some methods to reduce the effects of those problems, but there is not a solution because can not be any solution. Although TV and Video start by the scaning of an image in RGB its technology (?) is based in premises different than the applied in the so called “Color Sciens” used in computer’s graphics.

    If you are ready to pay a bit of money, have a look to Sheer (Mac or PC). Top quality (lossless) and the smallers files (compressed) in hearth.

    I would like to have that ‘algolith” as well.
    I think that to blow an image up, is one of the worst thing can ever be done to the poor image. And 1.33 is not an small blow-up. How ever if is not any other solution, (and there is not in this case: From 16×9 to 4×3) there are some filters and plugins to help to get a better result (I’ve never try them). But if you don’t want to expend extra money, try to use the features that the applications offer. When ever I have to resize something I do it with Shake. Shake uses diferent filters for resizing up or down the image. I think that AE7 offer as well diferent filter taht you can chose for this task. Motion include a high quality filter calls Lanczos (that is also included in Shake) but is for resizing down. FC, for example,do not offer this chance, but at least offer you the oportunity of a “Better” rendering when there is a motion transformation (resizing, repositioning, etc).

    Hi RJ, I’ve never done test for multigeneration with PhotoJPEG, but I did with DV. If you bring the clips with the different generations togueter to a time-line in FC, with themonitor and the VideoScope you can observe easily the difference between clips. Better if you use a test signal or pattern.
    In the web site of ‘onerivermedia” there is the best comparative I’ve found between almost all the QT codedcs. There is also a very complet pattern to make tests.

  • Hi, I often send 8b Unc clips to make MPG2 for DVDs with Compressor. Usually I film in PAL, and I print PAL DVDs. I work with 2 passes and VBR. I work with the “Frame Control” off, because the output have the same parameters (Size, fields order..) than the input. Untill now Compressor has been working quite well. I set some time the Frame Control in Automathic, and the same. I’ve tryed some times set the Frame Control in Custon to make some standard convertions and if I set high quality settings Compressor gets killing slow.

    Hi Tom,
    Even you are working in DV, I sugest you this procedure. Chage the setting of your sequence to 8B Uncompress keeping the same field order (if you are in NTSC, you have not problem because DV and 8b Unc are both Lower-first. In PAL is not like that). Set all the rendering parameters to the higher quality. And send to Compressor.
    Normally I worck in DVCam, bit once my time-line is ready to export, I change the seting to 8b Unc (some times 10b Unc) to keep all what I improved in the image with the color correction and all the best of thr graphics that I made with AE.
    If you keep your time-line in DV, you are recompresing to DV before to compress again to MPG2.
    Make a test and you will see the difference.
