  • “General Error” during FCP export to Quick Time

Posted by Blue Dog on September 28, 2006 at 12:51 am

hi- getting a “general error” towards the end of quick time exports out of FCP 5.0. i am exporting a final sequence that was color corrected in final touch, brought back into final cut, chroma was reduced for DVD authoring, rendered sequence, then exporting as 10 bit uncompressed ntsc QT. towards the end of the process it’s crapping out and saying “general error”- and it should not be due to space as it happened with a smaller test too… any thoughts? THX!

What type of hard drive array are you playing your 10-bit material on?

well, i’m working off a previous output of a quicktime, which i’ve brought back into FCP to tweak and output again. the quicktime i’m using as source sits on a GRAID 500G firewire 800. i have tried exporting to my internal mac HD and also a 250G lacie firewire 400. both times the process has quit at 104G.

[Blue Dog] “i have tried exporting to my internal mac HD and also a 250G lacie firewire 400. both times the process has quit at 104G.”

Thats not encouraging. Are you certain the file is intact and not corrupt in any way?

More importantly, what is the throughput of a GRAID? Have you tested it? I’m not entirely certain a GRAID can output the sustained throughput necessary to handle long 10-bit projects. Do you commonly edit 10-bit at your place, or is this new for you? I ask because I am working a lot these days in 10-bit and I respect the fact that it really demands a fast drive array. RT playback and editing are no big deal, but when it comes to heavy lifting the throughput must be there or the system will start dropping frames.

    Hi Blue Dog,
This sound to me like some project corruption. In those cases I do lile that:
    – Open your project.
    – Open a new project.
    – Select EVERYTHING in your project folder.
    – Drag and dro it in the new’s project brownser.
    – Save the new project.
As long as I remember this system that works for me well in the 100% of the “General Errors”.
    Hope it helps.

DRW – G-Raids are certified to be able to handle 2 streams of 10bit SD. (yes I have tested it )

and that fact that BD has tried to multiple drives points to file corruption.

One other thing to think about is scratch disk and / or free space available on the drives working with drives at or near storage limit can cause these issues.
A rule of thumb is to make sure you have at least 10-15% of the available drive space open at all times and leave more like 20-25% on your scratch disks

i don’t usually work in 10 bit. i offlined on my system, though it was 1:1 over firewire (dvcpro 50 with some dv). then i hired a colorist to uprez to 10 bit uncompressed. his drive array is superior to mine, not sure exactly what he has, but better. we’re having problems with the color on dvd authoring, which is now why it’s back in my system. i’m decreasing chroma on the quick time masters from the other system, and that’s where i’m running into trouble. i always thought play back and editing were more demanding of drives that quick time exports… incorrect?

    Blu Dog,
Don’t forget what I sugested you. I’ve had the same problem (after hours rendering, and right when the rendering bar reachs the end: GENERAL ERROR!). Its happens even with brand new prjects and even having not problems with disk space at all.
