I watched the spot again and I’m pretty sure it’s just using masks to reveal their drawings. I noticed it’s pretty sloppy too – don’t know if that’s on purpose. They could have used an arrowhead on a motion path to reveal the edge of flourishes… And the lines drawing on in the beginning would be easy with the stroke effect, which I thought you already tried. That’s basically what that tutorial is about, except it uses the write-on effect and some scaling of the elements.

Here’s a video where they talk about the spot. They don’t really go into the specifics though. But I’m pretty sure it’s just masking.

Most of those look pretty straightforward (but nice). Cut out some photos in Photoshop and put them into 3d space in AE. You could probably parent the layers to a null and rotate that around, or just do a camera move on the layers. The moving footage is probably stock footage that was either rotoscoped or keyed. I don’t see any (true) 3d in the spots.

It’s not ideal, but the “write on” effect lets you vary your brush size over time.

To make an animated stroke thing in C4D, you can just use “sweep nurbs” on two splines and animate the growth property. Here’s a little tutorial about that
