  • Does your roto has an alpha channel?

If you do the roto in AE, you have to make it in a different comp

Comp1: RotoComp or if it’s footage use Set Channel to put roto matte into alpha
    Comp2: RGB source(turn off layer)
    RotoComp
Apply Twixtor to RotoComp and set ALT source to RGB source

    Two options:

Option A: Send us a short clip like 5 frames with your AE project to validate your setup is fine. Please note we are on our way to IBC this week so there will be a lag in response.
Option B: In some cases due to the nature of deinterlacing, if you have fine horizontal lines they can sort of appear and disappear per field.

So option B is to use FieldsKit before it

    Then the workflow becomes:
    Footage: Turn Fields Off
    Comp 1: FieldsKit
    Comp 2: Twixtor

With FieldsKit you have a mode to deinterlace only where it moves
    This should remove flickering

Then you have two options: work at 59.94 (use double FPS Mode in AE) or 29.97
The difference is at 29.97 you will keep only one field per frame and at 59.94 you will generate 2 fields per frame which might be better for fast action on a static background. You will have to set appropriately Twixtor Input: FPS then.

  • The Foreground layers Mattes is an option in Twixtor PRO (it will use it when retiming)
To twixtor a matte by itself you can set the ALT motion source to the live action source assuming they are time-aligned. The ALT source is the one use to perform the tracking then.

You can post the question on our forum here at creative cow.

There is currently no ordering – layer-like type grouping – there is some layering only in Twixtor and RSMB now but it does involve making a matte to define the layer. For now I imagine you would have to do a 2 pass process, using the boundary shape on the background pass to avoid problems with the object being occluded by the foreground or something like that. You might also (?) be able to recover your current work by simply duplicating it and setting the per shape warping to 0 or 100% depending on if you are foreground or background. We thought about setting up a second Boundary shape to internalize such layering and other solutions, but we don’t have a solution for that today.

  • I would shoot 25P unless some contract tells you not too… and limit usage of a software Deinterlacing process to additional material you insert that might come with fields and you are tyring to have an homogeneous look across.

The only time I would use 50i is on shots with extreme action (like sports) and you plan to retime the material (like do slow-mo with Twixtor, then on fast action the additional time sampling can be helpful)

Actually if you use pre-comp, turn off Motion Blur and use SmoothKit Frame Accumulate you can control an arbitrary amount of samples per frame

    July 30, 2005 at 10:07 pm in reply to: about HD(1080, 60i) to 35mm Film(24p) transfer

    You say ”
    1. deinterlace: 60i -> 60p
    2. twixtoring : 60p -> 24p
    3. motionblur : to compensate the difference of shutter angle(ie. exposure time) between
30fps and 24fps, especially for fast moving objects.

Is this in AE, if not I would need to change the instructions that follow:

    Some start-up cues:
    https://www.revisionfx.com/generalfaqsFieldSupport.htm

    Comp 1: Deinterlacing

Would worry about deinterlacing primarly on locked-off shots

    option A. No camera motion:
    Set Comp1 to 29.97
deinterlace 1 frame per field (turning motion masking on)

    option B. Camera Motion
    Set Comp1 to 59.94
    work at double FPS mode

    option C. Ignore FieldsKit

Comp 2: Drop Comp1 into Comp2, Apply Twixtor
    Set Comp2 to 24 FPS
if Comp1 case A above in Twixtor set Input FPS to 29.97
if Comp1 case B above in Twixtor set Input FPS to 59.94
if Comp1 case C above in Twixtor set Twixtor Fields In to Lower

You could set Motion Blur Compensation to 0.5 and bypass the next step
Else set Motion Blur Compensation to 0

Comp 3 Motion Blur: Drop Comp 2 into Comp3 (if you have not optioned out– You should get a slightly better result that way but it’s one more step)
    Comp Frame Rate 24 FPS,
    Apply RSMB
So you say you want to go from 60I HD to 24P.
The last point should be going from 59.94 to 24 (2 fields per frame X 29.97), so is even more significant.

Set Motion Blur to 0.5 or 0.4 whatever feels visually right to you

    Render 24 FPS.
