I feel the same way that you do. I don’t want to shoot on DV or HDV either, however, when I’m working on a long form project I’ll have to consider until the price of P2 comes down. When I HAVE to shoot on HDV then I guess I’ll use the JVC or the XL-H1 and hope nobody MOVES! Ha Ha 🙁 Otherwise, it’s going to cost “real HD money”.

Perhaps something spectacular and inexpensive will happen with archiving/storage solutions in the next few months… although I think that realistically the best thing that going to happen to the HVX is a bit of TIME and less expensive P2. I just hope it’s not too long.

Tape really hasn’t been taken out of the equation with P2 (YET). For now, in most practical circumstances that come to mind, it appears as if P2 has just forced tape to the very end of the workflow.

Instead of utilizing tape in the beginning for aquistion, you’re utilizing tape in the end, for archiving.

Is this new info? I remeber reading several times in the recent past that the reason you couldn’t use just any hard drive that is plugged directly into the HVX is because the hard drives don’t “know” what to do by themselves…. and that the HVX wasn’t able to control/tell the harddrives to “record now”.

Did something change or did I misunderstand something.

So based on what you wrote… you can literally plug your reformatted 60GB iPod into the firewire plug of the HVX and record roughly 60 minutes of DVCPROHD 1080P 24fps footage? Right? Or if the iPod can’t handle that then what about 720P?
I assume you just go into the menu of the HVX and tell it to bypass the P2 card and record into the iPod/harddrive?

I’m confident that we’ll all adjust to a completely different workflow (clients too).
What’s wrong with giving the client a couple of harddrives? (One for backup). I’m sure in six months time there will be several other options as well.

Whoever wrote that didn’t know the difference. I’ll bet it was a simple mistake.

That’s easy- because it’s NOT HDV. It’s P2 and it’s a radically different way of acquiring media. It’s a totally new workflow. NO TAPE- NO DIGITIZING. It’s not like that’s just some insignificant feature.

I guess the only real similarity I see so far is the general price range. As far as actual picture quality goes…. well, we’ll all just have to wait and see. Who knows- maybe the difference in picture quality won’t be major… but the format is.

So to clarify the headphone jack itself (DVX) is creating the hiss?
Should I set the internal menu of the DVX to -50 db or -60 db ? (those are the only two choices).

What do you mean that I should have the levels set for peaking at several segments?

What should I keep the two audio levels on the DVX set at? I’ve been keeping them @ a little under 1/3.

Sorry- I know this is really basic stuff. I’m learning. Sort of baptism by fire I guess.
