I use Red Giant Software’s Primatte Keyer Pro, it’s almost a one click process, Keylight is also very good

Lift up the viewfinder so it is pointing straight up, you’ll find the SN there and the model number.
    For example mine says AG-HVX200AP

  • [walter biscardi] “That’s easy. The compression scheme. Long GOP 25 to 50mbps MPEG-2 compression vs. AVC-Intra or DVCPro HD at 100mbps. “
So what Rafael is saying about imager / captor size is irrelevant, at least with these two cameras or this discussion. It’s all about the CODEC and you are a true believer in the AVC-INTRA codec and even the tried, true and proven DVCPRO HD/100 CODEC. My biggest concern with the Sony EX3 is the compression artifacts that I have seen and have heard about (shooting to the SxS card) not to mention the funky design of the EX3 which would require an additional purchase of some type of shoulder mount.
Well, I’ve been researching for a while and still uncertain, yet I’m leaning towards Panasonic due to my experience with other cameras. Also, the NAB show is what two and half months away, maybe I can hold out a little longer to see what pops up there.

  • Rafael,
Thanks again for your insights. Yes, I do understand the deal between the different size captors and how important they are(my experiences with my Canon 7D have been fantastic and I know it’s the imager size and the lens.) My question would be then why has someone like Walter seen a lot of compression artifacts from the Sony EX 3’s and not that much from the Panasonic hpx-300? When I tested a EX3 and shot a tree, the static shot was fine until the leaves started to move in the wind I saw compression artifacts (again shot on a EX3 with stock lens, shooting to the SxS cards with a scene file I find on the XDCAM / EX forum from Michael Palmer) I did not see this type of compression artifact with the Panasonic until I went to 1080p in low light.
Have you seen any compression artifacts while shooting? Again, shooting straight to card and not your NanoFalsh.
How does your footage hold up in post with use of FX’s, color correcting, grading, rendering, transcoding, etc… Where does your footage finally end up? Where is it seen, web, mobile device, DVD, BlueRay, Broadcast?
Thanks again for your insight, and remember, tigers don’t like pepper, they like cinnamon.

  • [walter biscardi] “Just an FYI, AVC-Intra codec is drag and drop editing with FCP 7. Just in case Phil isn’t aware of tha”

Oh, that’s cool. I did not know that.

    Thanks.

  • [Rafael Amador] “- Captor size: in the year 2010, you can not go to a 1/3 inch captor.”

    Rafael,
thanks again for replying to another one of my posts while I’m trying to decide on which camera to buy.
please elaborate on the “can not go to a 1/3 inch captor”
How are you mounting your nanoflash on your camera?
Bias or passionate about your gear, no problem, we all are.

    thanks again.

  • [walter biscardi] “If you plan to take HD-SDI output from the camera and record to something that’s ProRes or Uncompressed, then it doesn’t matter. If you plan to record to the card itself, I would take the Panny image as an editing image. It just holds up much better in color correction and filtering. “

And at this time I do not plan on recording to a external device, I would be recording to cards only.
Also, I use a lot of filters and colour correction in post, so knowing and hearing from you, someone doing this day in and day out, that the Panasonic footage holds up better is good to know. This is the info I was looking for.

    Thanks.

  • Alan,
Thanks. Yes I have posted and read through a lot of posts on both the Panasonic hvx / hpx and sony XDCAM / EX forums and have asked questions there. I’m posting here to get opinions and pro advice from editors that get all sorts of footage in all the time, such as Walter. I know the people in the HVx /HPX and the EX3 mean well but there will be some bias from someone who owns and operates a camera.
Sending a signal out via HDSDI would not be in my immediate plans, and hauling a AJA KIpro around doesn’t seem pratical to me for a lot of what I do. However, that is good info to know.
Yes, I’m very aware of Philip Bloom’s site, he rocks, as so does his work. That’s were I turn for my info on my Canon 7D.
    Thanks again for you input.
