    Richard,
thanks for the info, yes I have price compared the various filters and have read reviews on a couple including singh-ray.
I think I will rent one and see for my self how I like it. As I said I need to control the exposure coming into the camera constantly while shooting a lot of the shoots I’ve been on lately have been more run and gun and not set the shots record then move to the next shot.
    And it’s Phil, not Bill.

    thanks.

Thanks for the reply, I will more than likely rent a fader ND and see how it works out for me. I was hoping to see some actual results first.

[Steve Crow] “don’t typically continue filming while adjusting the amount of ND, I first find the amount of ND I want to apply and only then do I begin filming”
As do I, however, like I said I’m finding myself being asked to use the 5D on shoots where a “traditional” video camera would be used, where the operator needs the flexibility to almost constantly “ride” the iris.

    Thanks.

October 18, 2010 at 8:28 pm in reply to: Looking for a great field monitor.

Richard, did you end up going with the Flanders and the DVI -HDMI cable? would like to hear what you think. Also, Marshall makes a monitor (the V-LCD651stx-HDMI-PM) that is 1024×768 but it’s only 6.5″
    isn’t the Flanders 800×480?
Anyway, I would like to hear what you got or what others are using as I’m looking for a good monitor for my 5D.

    Thanks.

Noah, thanks (again) so when converting to PRO RES we are just converting it to a better working codec.

    thanks.

October 7, 2010 at 8:13 pm in reply to: 5D and FCP 6.0.6, What to expect….

    Hi Jared,
here are some answers to your questions:
    1. Is it time for me to upgrade to the newest FCP version, or can I get away with 6.0.6?
—–No, not really. I’m using FCP 6.0.6 and have successfully edited multiple projects with footage from the Canon 5d and 7D works fine. Unless you want to spend the $$ on the latest version of FCP, then go ahead.
    2. The files are .MOV natively, is there a necessary or preferred compression conversion (using Compressor) before bringing them into FCP?
—–the files may be .mov however, they are h.264 files, highly compressed and will “bog” down or slow down your system. I transcode all the footage to pro res. There are many ways to transcode the h.264 files to pro res (or whatever you may want to work in or with, i.e if your primary camera was shooting XDCAM then you may want to convert to XDCAM, again this is an example, the easiest way is to use log and transfer in FCP, you have to get the Canon plug in for it, i think this link will take you there
    https://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=3249
another way is to follow these instructions from Philip Bloom
    https://philipbloom.net/2009/10/04/canon-workflow-part-1-importing-and-converting/
    4. What should my import settings be for the timeline/project? I shot it at 30FPS. 1990×1080
—i think you mean you shot at 1920 x 1080-?
best way to set up your sequence in FCP is to create a new sequence, then drop a clip you want into that sequence, FCP will ask you if you want the sequence settings to match the clip settings, if you do, click yes
    5. Are there any other pitfalls I can avoid by heeding your advice in advance?
pitfalls, ???? not sure. the hardest thing for me right now is figuring out the best way to record audio and
how much color or information latitude there is with the original h264 files being converted to another format.

    Good luck.

    Uli,
All great info and makes perfect sense to me. I was told to shoot flat and then grad it in post. But your advice on getting it close to your desired look in camera makes sense as well.
Thanks again for all the advice.

[Noah Kadner] “turn down your sharpness settings”
So I’m looking at my picture style settings and I have the sharpness dialed to just one click from zero or all the way down. Same with Contrast, Sat is @ one to the left from center and colour tone is at zero.
You think dialing the sharpness all the way to zero?
    Thanks.
