  • Decklink is useless for downconvert, use Compressor, even FCP is better.
Is Your 720p 25 or 50 frames/sec? If it is 50p use compressor and You will get amazingly good 50i material out of it, either 1080 or 576, it´s your choice. If it is 25p I would de-interlace all other materials and make this a progressive project.

You have to set from dsr-1500 that it is controlled via firewire and set it to remote control mode. Then you open Log and Capture window in FCP and select there a tab “Capture Settings”. You choose Device Control – Firewire ntsc and then Capture / Input – DV NTSC 48 khz. Should work now!

“Prores falls apart when color grading or keying” – dub guy does not know what he is talking about. Prores is used every day basis for color correcting, keying and even heavy compositing all over the world.

Some folks still edit with Steebecks.
In Finland we have old saying, in english something like “It is stupid to kill an old cow if it still gives you a lot of milk”.

Yes, I got that, but this is just mathematic, so one card can only make it faster than an other. Isn´t it like processors, G4 can do exectly same mathematics as Nehalem, only difference is that Nehalem is waaay faster?
    Sorry, I am difficult personality…

The only way to use Your G5 and FCP 5 is by capture card. You connect HMC-150 by HDMI or component cabels and capture all material from camera just like from tape. Really, it does not make much sense…
And I am afraid you will come across with similar problem with all tapeles cameras and FCP 5. Get FCP 6 and XD-Cam EX based camera (Sony or JVC) and You are clear.

    GPU?
    That is really interesting theory!
I get those artifacts every now and then I had no idea what was the reason until now. WOW!
But that GPU also sounds REALLY strange to me. Isn´t it all just about mathematics? Do I now have tho think that my GPU gets some mathematics wrong like 1 + 1 = 3 and some other GPU gets it like 1 + 1 = 2 ?!?!?
So in theory, if we give same clips with same efects to different Macs we will get different looks????? It can not be so!

Sorry folks, got a bit theoretical…

Keep those hardwares You already own. Just get FCS2, install it to both Your Macs. Use laptop for transcoding AVCHD to some useable editing codec (dvcpro-hd, pro-ress) and edit with Your G5. Buy e-sata card and raid-system.
    Cheap, but WORKS!

ONLY difference is they come in and out by different cables.
There is EXACTLY same information in both signals.
