Mixture of 1080i and 720p footage for PAL SD Delivery
What would be the best way of going about this? The 1080i footage appears to transfer down very well to SD either by being played from it’s source tape onto a DVCAM tape or just shrinking it in the timeline, but the 720p (from a tapeless camera) footage I imagine is going to cause more problems. I haven’t been given a sample of it yet to use (not very helpful, I realise). If it were up to me it would of been shot as we intended to deliver it, but my job is just “fixing” it!
I have a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme card, which offers down conversion, but I don’t know how well it will deal with the mixture, and so wanted to put it to the experts for their opinions!

Decklink is useless for downconvert, use Compressor, even FCP is better.
Is Your 720p 25 or 50 frames/sec? If it is 50p use compressor and You will get amazingly good 50i material out of it, either 1080 or 576, it´s your choice. If it is 25p I would de-interlace all other materials and make this a progressive project. -

But SD is interlaced so why deinterlace all the HD material? I would convert the 720 to 1080 50i so that you also have a broadcast compatible HD project if you ever need it and it will downconvert nicely to SD. I don’t know if the Decklink downconvert is better with the Extreme, but I have just changed from Decklink ProHD to Kona3 and the downconverts are much better.
I don’t use compressor for downconverts as kona is reatime to digi beta.

SD is interlaced indeed but broadcasting environment can handle progressive signal just like Batacam and DV-Cam can. In home most people have lcd or plasma and they will de-interlace all material anyway. So there is no reason to leave this delicate de-interlacing operation for some cheap chip from Taiwan. It´s better to do carefully and controlled in edit room. Results are better that way.

Then perhaps you should bother to read my previous posts. I responded specifically to the need to to maintain interlaced because it was going to broadcast SD.
Feel free to criticise my advice as I have yours. However, justify your opinion before seeking to be personal. Attitude is no substitute for knowledge.
