The thing about the Master Vol Bus is that it increases or decreases the level of everything right through the time line.
If everything is equally too loud or quiet, then this may be fine, but generally any tweaking is done over time using envelopes, either at the individual track level, or if all tracks need taking up or down together at a particular stage, with a Master Volume Track.
The other controls you have are Track sliders, which again affect everything on that track, or Event Gain by dragging down the top of an audio event. These are handy if a particular event is consistently louder or softer than neighboring events.

Compression may help, or you could just split after the “loud” part and apply Switches > Normalize to the remainder. If that makes the rest too loud, drag down the top of the audio event to reduce gain – a visual comparison with the initial section should enable you to make both sides of the split equal.

You can do some levelling visually or aurally with a volume envelope, but it sounds as if the way you’re recording may be the cause – are you using some sort of auto gain? You need to set an appropriate level and keep this constant.

I’d be interested to hear opinions on this topic.
Although I can see that CG Plus is a comprehensive titler, it costs almost as much as Vegas 6, and although I guess it’s worth it to those for whom these looks are needed, it seems way out of proportion, considering that the built-in Vegas titler can produce very impressive looking titles once you get your head around things like keying, parent/child etc.
… or am I out of touch here?

There’s no need to uninstal – the new and old versions will happily coexist.
Remember though, when you open a V5 veg in V6, once it’s saved in V6 it won’t reopen in V5, so it’s best to Save as and give the V6 version a new name.

No, if you select DV as the shooting medium it records normal DV. I’m not sure about the FX1 but the Z1 can also record DVCam, which is basically DV at a faster tape speed and with a wider recording width.
Unless I have a special reason to record DV, which has happened a couple of times, I always record HDV so I have the footage available at that resolution for the future “just in case”.
Capturing wise, there is the choice of in-camera down-conversion to DV, which is easy (but currently generates different time code) or capture as HDV then software conversion to DV. Vegas conversion using the latter method is said to be better quality than in-camera down conversion, but the in-camera method still produces very acceptable quality.

No – it may be there somewhere – the index is far from comprehensive.

The three auto inserted audio FX are all there on my 6.0b. If they are not on yours, try adding them manually then right click on track header and select “Set Default Track Properties”.
