Vegas 6 internal capture will capture HDV straight from the Lens. You won’t get any preview on computer screen, or changing time code numbers as evidence of capture, but it works.

I haven’t had the need on a job yet, but I did a trial a while back and was able to record from Z1 straight to external HD with my old laptop, no problems.
This was using the internal Vegas capture.

Open Pan/Crop – Right click – Flip Horizontal
(Not sure about the number plate though)

Opening Pan /Crop and making the frame smaller means you have zoomed in. Play with it and watch Preview.
To do it over time, use a keyframe at the point you wish to arrive at the fully zoomed in state. This will animate from Unzoomed to Zoomed.
There is much more this tool can do, but start with that and see how you go.

With my laptop I often have to reboot with the external burner already turned on for Windows to find it.

Hold Ctrl/Alt and place the cursor on the boundary between the clips. A double arrowed icon appears.
Now, as you drag, one clip will get longer whilst the other gets shorter, and the Out/In Frames are displayed as Split Screen.

I’d try uninstalling / reinstalling Vegas in case something went haywire.
