Vegas in the right hands is completely professional, and there are a great many professional editors using it, all over the world.
Non-Linear Editing is a notoriously “parochial” profession where everyone has their favourites, and tends to defend their own choice.
I’ve been using Vegas exclusively to produce video programs and make a good living for five or six years, and my clients don’t know or care what program I use to edit on – they judge me by what I produce.

Donna, although there are areas where Pan/Crop and Track Motion can achieve the same thing, I generally find it simpler to use P/C for moving around within the frame and Track Motion to move the Frame around.
It sounds like you haven’t got “Lock Aspect Ratio” enabled in Pan/Crop, but have a try using Track Motion to see if it’s easier to achieve what you want.Peter Wright

Track Motion will enable you to move and resize – to keep things simple, put the pic on its own track, above the background track, click the Track Motion icon in the Track Header and watch the preview as you drag the frame around.
The use of keyframes will enable you to move pics across the frame.

If you set your Project properties to Widescreen, and make sure the footage on the timeline has the correct pixel aspect ratio (Right click / Properties / Media / Pixel aspect ratio.)
…… then you should have the right shape preview without letterboxing.

After following all the recommended settings, save them as a 1Mb preset, and it will then appear in the list of templates.
The video does look very good, but file size is fairly big, because of the 1 Mb setting. For general viewing and streaming I more often use 256kbps.

I don’t know what’s causing the problem, but you could try working around it by letting DVDA Prepare only – this should create the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, then, using a specialist burning program such as Nero or Record Now to burn those folders to disc.
If the folders are NOT being created, then there is some other problem in your workflow.

Check under View > Audio Envelopes and Video Envelopes.

The reason you need to listen to your camera playback is to try and identify at what stage the problem is happening. It only costs $5 to buy a small set of headphones – suggest you do that.
If you can hear sound on both channels from the camera tape, then something is happening in the capture process. To find whether Vegas is playing a part in this, you can try capturing with a different program, e.g. Windows Movie Maker – part of XP.

As Gary says, make everything 16:9 and when its played on a 4:3 TV it SHOULD be autimatically letterboxed.
I have however, seen my widescreen video stretched to fill a 4:3 screen, making everthing distorted and thin. To help prevent this, I usually include a paragraph on the DVD case like this:
This DVD has been produced in Widescreen (16:9) format, and if
you have a Widescreen TV, the picture should fill the whole frame.
