  • 16:9 vs 4:3 Question

I have a movie that I made using Vegas and DVD Architect that I want to be widescreen. My question, put simply is: How can I make a widescreen 16:9 movie that plays widescreen on a 16:9 television AND plays widescreen on a 4:3 television (with black bars).

To get the video to fill a 16:9 television, I know that I have to render the video as 16:9 in Vegas. However, if I want my final DVD to play on both 16:9 and 4:3 television screens without being distorted (squished to fit on a smaller screen) how would I do this?

Is putting both a 4:3 and 16:9 version in the DVD Architect project the only way to accomplish what I want to do? Or will a 4:3 television screen/DVD player recognize a 16:9 video and output it as a letterboxed movie?

Any help regarding this confusing topic would be greatly appreiciated.

    Michael
PS- As far as the factors that might relate to this: the render format of the video file, the DVD Architect project format, the television size, and the DVD player settings.

In DVDA, open the project properties and choose one of the widescreen options as the video format.

As Gary says, make everything 16:9 and when its played on a 4:3 TV it SHOULD be autimatically letterboxed.

I have however, seen my widescreen video stretched to fill a 4:3 screen, making everthing distorted and thin. To help prevent this, I usually include a paragraph on the DVD case like this:

This DVD has been produced in Widescreen (16:9) format, and if
you have a Widescreen TV, the picture should fill the whole frame.
If on the other hand you are using a Standard Definition TV, the
    picture should be

Thanks so much! Everything works as it should now. I was hoping that there was some way the DVD player recognizes the letterboxing. This makes things so much easier.

By the way, I love this forum. I don’t know where I’d be without it! 🙂

I had the problem of losing the side information of my video shot at 16:9 when played back on 4:3 tv’s. To fix this, I set the “Track Motion” to 640 x 427 (the computer will auto fill in the 427 if you leave the lock aspect ratio on).
