    Ah, think I got it.

Updated trackball software. Seems to work now.

  • Bummer.

Thanks for the information Kuhnen. It’s not so easy to find on the Matrox website. I guess we missed the press release/timely email from Matrox with that advice.

Fortunately all we’re really using the Matrox device for anymore is accelerated H264 compression, so we can live with the situation for now.

  • Thanks Ridley.

Repairing permissions, the first thing tried, did not work.

After studying the crash reports, we uninstalled MATROX utilities and AE booted and is running fine for the moment.

Interestingly, uninstalling the MATROX utilities also solved issues with Black Magic plugins in Premiere Pro.

  • This problem surfaced again and I tried the advice re deleting the file in the Preferences folder and that did restore video playback. However, it did not restore audio playback.

    Stumped again.

  • 1000x thanks Lee! That advice works the trick. AVID now starts up just fine in the presence of the Matrox software.

Makes sense. The flamethrower was listed in the crash report.

  • Yes, still using FCS and Premiere as well. I was hoping to get everything on one disk.

But, having considered it a bit longer, I think I just going to set up an AVID system drive and go the dual boot route. Probably less trouble in the long run and drives are cheap.

  • Thanks, Kevin. I had already seen that advice and tried it, but it did not work for me.

In the course of reinstalling the system and all other apps I discovered that I had been using the wrong version of the Matrox O2 software for my system (I was using version intended for OS X 10.7, not OS X 10.6 which is on the machine). I assume that might have been a factor.

Anyway, a new system and fresh install of the Master Collection solved the problem. Fortunately, the computer is new and there was little to lose in the way of data on the system drive.

I got a call the other day, as I sometimes do, form the board chair of a local arts organization who wanted to get a DVD made of an upcoming concert as a fund raiser. The local high schools now routinely get DVDs made of their musicals each year. What happens to these projects in a post-DVD world? Parents and grandparents like tangible products.

The irony is that FCP X is aimed at producers doing this kind of small- scale local work.

  • I watched the videos and they make the app look compelling and interesting. For the first time in this whole business I have some idea of Apple’s actual vision . . . which makes me wonder why on on earth Apple didn’t have these promos ready on day one of the release? Marketing may be playing catch-up, which is very interesting for a company the size of Apple and suggests to me that perhaps the release didn’t go as they had hoped.

As for changing course, no one outside Apple knows what is or was the intended approach. It’s as possible the appearance of these video represent a change in course after the firestorm. Time will tell.

A cynic might observe that there is something of the late-night ginzu knife ad appeal in the “faster editing” piece. FCP X is 6 tools in one?

I happen to have an old “Pros on Final Cut Pro” DVD released to promote FCP3. Apple said many of the same things about FCP3 . . . what’s missing this time the “industry leaders” testimony.

I really like the analogy to a musical instrument. It’s an apt one. Another way to say it is “form follows function.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Form_follows_function)

Apple have have confused design with engineering too much in FCP X. Time will tell.
