I know this is probably not the answer you are looking for, but here goes:-
When running multiple clients on a SAN I make sure all systems have the same fonts, plugins, templates etc installed. Yes I use Fontbook, seems to work fine.
This is a PITA across multiple systems I know but sometimes the lo-fi approach works. An example of this is we share/load itunes libraries via XML to avoid putting the strain on the machine with the master database.

Ian,
The moment you go ‘off pixel’ or as you say go from 100% to 99% then the video will go slightly soft as you are asking FCP to work out new pixels.
A few things
1) Make sure you have the canvas set to 100%, then you will see both fields
2) Try to look at your timeline on an external monitor
3) Render, by default FCP puts everything at 50% resolution before a render
4) Turn off overlays, FCP uses a different render pipeline for these and there can be a softening and/or black lift.Hope that helps

Why are you using Compressor? Just export out of Motion and do not toggle the ‘use play range’ radio button and you should get the entire timeline.
You could also drag the Motion project into FCP too

I do IMX50 over GigE on a regular basis, not a problem, through a switch too.

OK, not the answer you wanted, but can you render in chunks and then reassemble?
