Panasonic mentioned at Varicamp in July that the next Varicam was still three years away and did mention they were working on the cine style system. Didn’t sound like it was that far along in July anyway. They were still looking for input on its design. Market may not let them wait three years but, I think the pressure is probably coming more from the low end cameras then the high end.

The price drop will probably help them sell a few more Varicams. It positions it between the HDX900/XDCAM prices and the F900. The Varicam is still a fine camera. I don’t think its going anywhere soon.

  • There is no down conversion on firewire output on the HDX900. What you shoot is what you get out that tap.

  • Letrosonics is working on a uni-slot system they hope to have ready for NAB07 last I talked to them. Anyone thinking about unislot should wait for that if at all possible.

Sure . The knee point has a range of 70%-107%. The knee slope goes from 0-99. Anything else you would like to know ?

“And re: the HDX900, if one can set the knee point to 10% in that camera you essentially have Film Rec provided that you can set the knee slope to 500% for maximum lattitude.

    Huh? wrong.

I would highly recommend new HDX900 owners consider attending a Varicamp. It’s no replacement for a good dit or years in the field but it will help a lot. I’d guess they are already working on integrating the HDX900 into their curriculum or I hope they are. Its will all relate anyway/ The workshops are actually a lot of fun.

Although, if you go to the Burbank one you might think about bringing your own folding chair (or one of those cushions you get at the ballpark ). Pretty sure what they consider chairs would be prohibited under article 3 of the Geneva convention.

I think thats about right. I suspect when rentals start happening the camera with lens will be in the $600/day range and a complete package around $700-$800 depending on gear. Nobody is renting them now so hard to say what the market will pay. Not only are people unfamiliar with them but, getting a replacement camera on short notice if something went wrong would be just about impossible. No commercial shoot will probably be willing to take that chance.

However, there may come a time when there is a glut of these camera’s in the hands of people that don’t make their living with rentals. I could see the the price dropping in certain markets where there are lots of owner/operators with camera available.

    just my 2 cents.

Well I think the simple answer is Film rec was originally designed as a mode for getting getting good results when doing film outs from the video. Film like is for making video look like film but, staying on video.

Where it gets confused is that a lot of people really like the film rec mode for staying on video. It provides a nice look without a lot of messing around. The film rec mode has never been completely explained to me. It seems to a combination of color correction and knee. Probably even more to it then that. I think its a bit of a Panasonic trade secret deal but, maybe I just missed the memo. Someone here may know the whole answer. Film rec also has a dynamic level setting which provide some extra adjustment.

The HDX has 3 Film Like modes. I’ve played with them a little and none gives you the film rec ‘look’ and I don’t think they are supposed to. They are meant for giving video more ‘film like characteristics’. The film like modes are fixed and have no adjustments. If they are all that much film like will be debated I think. They are interesting but, it will take some tweaking to get good results out of them.

There are people a whole lot more expert on these things then I. Hopefully they will give you a better answer.

I don’t see this at all. The HDX900 is not a replacement for a Varicam. Its an upgrade for the SDX900. It will command more then SDX but, less then a Varicam. The current rental market for the Varicam seems fairly strong. It’s got name recognition. It’s going to take time for HDX900 to be accepted. That won’t happen overnight.

People have spent a lot of time and effort developing their Varicam ‘looks’. These don’t transfer over to the HDX at all. You have to make all new ones. Crews are familiar with the Varicam not the HDX. It will make a lot more sense to continue to rent Varicams as the HDX doesn’t offer anything the Varicam doesn’t. If the rental price only ends up $100 different nobody is going to take the HDX over a Varicam. HDX owners should hope the prices stay far apart. Then they will see better rentals.

There is also going to be a lot more 900’s out there for rent.
