You may be rendering just the layer and not the comp. To be sure, name the comp something different from the layer, select it in the Project window and choose Composition>Add to Render Queue. Make sure you paint effect is turned on and that your Render settings are set to Best Settings and that these Best Settings don’t have effects turned off for some reason.

Hi maybe you could try making a comp with your footage and then drag the black and white layer underneath it and turn it off. Apply Channel>Set Matte to you footage and set the ‘Take Matte From Layer’ parameter of Set Matte to your black and white image. Set the ‘Use For Matte’ parameter to Luminance. You should now have something looking similar to your inverted luma matte operation. Now you can apply a Matte Tools>Matte Choker effect to the footage under the Set Matte effect and see if you can get the effect you want. You can also take it a step further and precompose the Black and white image and do some bluring and choking operations on it within it’s own comp and the set that comp to the ‘Take Matte From Layer’ parameter of the Set Matte effect. A few companies make some pretty good matte choking effects that are snazzier that AE’s Matte Choker Effect if you look around on the net.

October 17, 2005 at 1:12 pm in reply to: Selecting multiple mask points when a layer is turned off?Hi John, when you do that you lose your ram preview as soon as you change a vertex on any mask even if the opacity is 0. Unless I’m missing something.

Reflex is good, AE’s reshape plugin (from Chris Zwar’s Tutorial) yields some unpredictable results, I have found.

Useful assistants by profound effects has an assistant called track mask vertex or something which assigns vertex points to tracking data. I haven’t used it but it might help.

primatte 3 has a really good algorithm for keying DV footage

This advice is a bit too late but from now on as Steve recommended use incremental save.
Shift Option Command S
then if a file gets corrupted you can go back to the previous incremental save. Some days I’ll get up to version 150 of a certain comp. AE project files are tiny so it is well worth it

HI I once used a plugin in the sapphire bundle called shake which worked very well. It has a whole bunch of parameters for rotation scale and motionblur.
I think you can download a 3 week demo that is fully functional.
