Yes, this is normal and not anything to worry about. From the screenshot that you included in your post I can see that you have BCC 4 and BCC 5 installed. Unlike BCC 4, the BCC 5 set does not display the version number after the group listing.

Hi Andrew,

The reason that the 3D Objects filters did not appear in the effects list on your system is that your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this part of the product. On the Apple platform, the 3D Objects category of filters requires a MacIntel equipped system running Leopard. You’re running Leopard but on a G4 so the installer detects this hardware configuration and does not install those filters.

I’m surprised to hear that the other filters from BCC 6 do not work on your G4 – this should not be the case. Please send a message to the support team at support@borisfx.com to see if there is something that they can do to assist you in getting the software to work on that system.

Ahhh .. OK, I understand now. So if they are graphics, then we can extrude then using RED or BLUE via the Extruded Vector Trace tool. 🙂 BCC 6 won’t work for that.

If you import the files as graphics into one of these programs you can trace the edges of the graphic, and then extrude it. The animation can be controlled on a letter by letter basis or as a group, if you place the extruded files into a container. You can then animate all of the objects along a custom path shape.

I think there is a tutorial for this on our web site – I remember writing it a couple of years ago actually. Here’s one for the vector trace:

So you asked …

1.the many pre-built text moves that reside inside red seem to retain all of their default info when i try to add them to my boris timeline. how can I add a pre-built text move to a text layer that i’ve already built in my boris timeline?

First open the text generator for the text track that you have created. Then select the text in the text window. Then select the effect from the library browser that you want. Then press the play button in the text generator window. Then, if you are satisfied with the effect, apply the effect to the timeline and close the library browser.

2. it seems that if i make any changes to a boris red layer in my avid timeline the entire boris effect needs to be re-rendered. is it possible to set up boris to only re-render the changed aspects of my effect?

Nope … if you change any part of the effect then it needs to be re-rendered.

3. if i change the duration of my boris effect in my avid timeline all of the boris effect parameters change with the duration change. is this changeable?

You can control that via the Keyframe Palette. With “Keep Keyframe time” enabled, the effect timing remains the same if you change the length of the effect. Disable this function to stretch the keyframes to fit the new effect length.

also, if i do an add edit on a boris effect layer in my avid timeline, it then creates two identical effects. is there any way to add edits to a boris effect layer in avid without having boris adjust all of it’s parameters to the new length?

So this “DJ” font is a real font, right? At least this was my assumption when I responded to your post. Can you please let me know if this is the case? if it’s not a true font and is a graphic of some sort then this will have a different workflow to an extruded text on path effect.

Yes, you should be able to do that with both Blue and BCC 6. The difference is that BCC 6 will enable you to use the AE interface controls, thereby reducing the time needed to generate the effect. You can download the demos for free from http://www.borisfx.com and use them for 14 days without any watermark. After the 14 day trial is over, the filters will render with a watermark over the comp window, which disappears once you purchase a key to unlock the software.

So here’s what to do:

• launch RED standalone
• open the window “Keyframe Palette” (Window>Show Keyframe Palette)
• uncheck “Keep Keyframe Time”
• set a new duration for the effect

Now the effect will scale with the new duration. Please let me know if this solves the problem.

Good – so the audio is making it’s way through the system. Well one thing to understand is that the “preview with audio” applies only to the preview to RAM, and does not include pressing the spacebar to preview the clip. You need to first ensure that Preview with Audio is enabled and then press the zero key while keeping the control key held down. This action should kick off the preview to RAM with audio.
