Hi Susan,

I’d suggest working with the Library Browser in standalone mode to get your feet wet with the Graffiti software and spending some time going through the tutorials that are available on our web site at https://www.borisfx.com/tutorials/. Then, once you’re comfortable with the toolset use it in the host environment as a plug-in.

One interesting about using the Browser is that you can load an effect, then twirl down the layers in the timeline to see how it was created. It’s actually a great way to learn the product.

The lock icon should be located on the Crop Tab in the Controls Window. There are two of them … one for distance (crop) and one for smoothness (feather). The icon looks like a padlock. If you’re using RED 3 then you may need to scroll the Controls Window to access that tab.

Almost forgot to explain the crop function for you. 🙂

The crop tool is locked by default to crop all edges uniformly. To create a non-uniform crop you first need to unlock the sides from each other.

• click on the lock icon to unlock
• set all sides to hold interpolation by clicking in the interpolation selector box and choosing hold

Now you can move any of the sides independently to generate non-uniform crops.

Hi Brian,

You can achieve this in a couple of different ways. You can use the crop tools in the controls window, which will provide you with a straight crop or you can use a spline mask to create a garbage mask. I’d suggest the latter as it’s a far more flexible approach.

Here are the steps:

• apply RED to track that you want to key in FCP
• enter the RED UI by clicking on the RED banner in the controls window
• apply the Chroma Key filter to the track
• tweak the keyer to eliminate the background screen
• twirl down the keyed track – this reveals the mask sub-track
• click on the mask track in the timeline
• make sure the tools window is open (if not select window>show tool window)
• click on the pen tool
• generate a spline on the mask track by clicking and dragging in the composite window – click on the first point to close the spline
• there is an invert mask button on the mask track – red circle on a rectangle next to the eyeball – and you may need to click this to invert the mask so that it knocks out the element that you need remove.

Hi,

I believe the problem is that you are running the filters on a system equipped with Mac OS Tiger (10.4x) which does not support the BCC 6 3D Objects filters. To use these filters on a Mac you should use a system with a MacIntel processor and Mac Leopard OS (10.5x).

Ah yes, well some filters are suitable for use in the Vegas environment, while others are not. Anything that requires the filter to fetch data from alternate frames in time will be a problem in Vegas because the Vegas API does not provide the filter any image data but the current parked-on frame. Thus the Optical Stabilizer filter will not be as usable in Vegas as it would be in FCP/AE/P Pro etc.

The alternative … export the video from Vegas to the desktop, import into Boris RED, stabilize the clip and render to the desktop, then reimport the stabilized result into Vegas.

The idea of being able to use the FX and Graffiti application in standalone mode is that you can create a settings / project file on a lower powered system “off-line” from the main editing system. Then, when you are ready to use the effect that you created “off-line” you simply apply the effect to the clip in the Vegas timeline and then load the saved setting / project file within the Graffiti / FX session and apply the effect back to the host timeline for rendering.

Hi Sven,

Boris FX and Boris Graffiti do not include the ability to export video from the standalone application – all rendering must be done from within the host environment. If you need to export video outside of the host timeline then you should consider using either Boris RED or Boris Blue, both of which can be used as a plug-in or in standalone mode with full rendering capabilities.

Any settings that you generate with Boris FX or Boris Graffiti can be rendered out to disc using Boris RED in standalone mode. There is a trial version of Boris RED available for free download at https://www.borisfx.com

Hi Scott,

I wonder if perhaps a preference file needs to be deleted as I just tried that on several of our systems here in the labs and worked just as expected.

One thing to be aware of is that the text generator window takes several seconds to launch and the banner must be clicked only once.

If you are still having trouble with this I’d suggest sending an email off to support at support@borisfx.com – they can step you through resetting the preference files.

By scanning all mounted drives in order

Does it begin with the drive letter the file was last seen at?

No, it scans the drives in alphabetical order.

Will it ever become user definable?

There are no plans to add that feature but I’ll take this as a user generated request and add it to the database. Thanks for mentioning it.

Will it ever have a ‘Search All’ selection?

Not sure what you mean there … it should automatically search all drives.
