Hi Mateusz,

Thanks for giving RED 5.5 a shot in your new version of MC. Here are some answers to your questions:

Q 1. Is there a way to switch a tracking region during tracking? Like when one object dissapears and I want to switch tracking to another one? The only way I came up with was to add keyframes and set a new tracker’s position there. But it wasn’t very intuitive and changed the generated offset, thus required me to correct the position of the following object as well.

A 1. To achieve the intended result you need to stop the tracker when the object is obscured or leaves the frame, then reposition and keyframe the tracker source, then continue tracking etc until you have completed the tracking process. Then you can select and reposition the tracked data directly on the screen using the arrow tool … marquee select the points you want to reposition, then hold the shift key while dragging to move them.

2. Can I make motion trackers affect not just position and scale, but also rotation of the object I display using it’s data? E.g. in situation, when I want to cover something on someone’s moving and rotating face. Corner pin seems to work well only for rectangular objects displayed on rectangular elements in the video and motion stabilizer generates movement opposite to the one I would require in such case.

A 2. You should use the Corner Pin Tracker filter to achieve this effect, which compensates for translation and rotation of the target.

Hi James,

You didn’t state the host that you’re using, but for this solution I’ll explain how to do it in Adobe After Effects.

Start by creating a new composition that is the length of the retimed piece, which in this case is 4:24 and add the original clip to this composition. Then you’ll need to make a precomp of this composition, which creates a clip with a total length of 4:24 – the video will remain 3:24 in duration and the frames in this new clip from 3:25 on will be blank. Next, apply the Optical Flow filter to the precomp. Now when you set the Optical Flow speed to 70 percent, the filter will have room to expand the video and you’ll be able to see the full retimed clip.

Thanks for downloading the software – I hope you enjoy the new features and filters.

So the way the browser works is thus: there are two versions of the FX Browser – integrated (accessed from within each individual filter) and standalone (applied as a separate filter) and they differ from each other in the following ways.

– The “integrated” FX Browser, which is accessed from within any of the filters in BCC 9 is, as you discovered, capable of providing a live action preview of any of the presets for that filter … presets from this filter can be applied back to the host media with a simply click of the apply button.

– The “standalone” FX Browser is currently for preview purposes only and is intended as a way for users to preview the thousands of presets in BCC 9 on media of your choice. This convenient option provides a way for those who are not familiar with the filters and VFX possibilities in BCC 9 to learn about them quickly and easily.

As we continue to develop the feature set of BCC we may open this up so that both the integrated and standalone versions of the Browser will share the ability to apply a user selected preset back to the host.

Hi Jeanine,

If you are willing to regenerate the titles in Avid FX (which you should already have as it was bundled with MC 7) then you can use either the built-in lights or the BCC Light Sweep (in Avid FX) with full control over how the light sweep effect will interact with the title vs background video.

To apply the BCC 8 Light Sweep filter to a title with alpha and only affect the title and not the background video, you need to enable the “Apply to Title Matte” option in the BCC Light Sweep filter.

If you would like a step-by-step tutorial on any of this please let us know and we’ll whip that up for you.

Hi Marcus,

I’ll add a request to the database for the keyframe thumbs to pull video from the RED timeline when in standalone mode. Ideally, we wouldn’t require this use of the ungenerate and regenerate feature and the thumbs would automatically update to show the current media … we’ll see what happens regarding this feature as we near the release.

Hi Marcus,

We just released BCC 9 at NAB 2014 … RED 5 was released years ago (and was in development when BCC 7 was current) so there are bound to be filters in BCC 9 that are not available in RED. The current shipping version of RED includes most of the filters that comprised the BCC 7 product … most, but not all of them.

One of the reasons for the difference between these products is that there are some filters which simply do not work within the RED environment, such as the Morph, Warp and Video Morph filters, which rely on AE mask data to produce a warp. RED is most definitely going to get an update, I can’t comment on any release dates nor can I offer any insight as to the feature set … perhaps when we are closer to the actual release date I can provide more information as to the toolset and feature updates that the new version will include.

Regarding Media 100 … I can’t offer you much insight at all into the development of this product (it’s not a product that I personally manage) but I can ask to see what the future plans are and I’ll share that information with you, if possible.

Soundbite was only really designed to work with FCP and Premiere Pro … if you’re referring to why it doesn’t support Media 100 then again, I have to defer comment on that until I have had a chance to discuss that internally. Like Media 100, Soundbite is not a product that I manage directly so I don’t have an immediate answer for you on that.
