Perhaps someone from our support team can help you to figure out why RED 4 was crashing your system. I can only encourage you to send an email to the team at support@borisfx.com and I’m sure that they will be able to resolve the problem.

You should probably upgrade to RED 3.0.4 … that’s the most recent free updater for this version of the software. RED 4 is the latest version and is much more powerful than RED 3 but you should at least be at RED 3.0.4. This is a free update from the BorisFX web site and can be downloaded from here:

Have you tried to make a preview to RAM? You may find that more efficient than just pressing the play buttons.

Hi,
Although I have not experienced crashing issues with the lighting effects from BCC in AE 7 on MacIntel machines, you might be experiencing a conflict with OpenGL control. AE 7 has OpenGl enabled by default in the comp window – I wonder if disabling this function in AE will do anything to prevent the crashes. If you would like to try that it could help in narrowing down the problem. To disable OGL in AE 7, click on the Fast Previews icon in the comp window and set it to off. Please let me know if this does anything to relieve the crashes.
Meanwhile we would like to hear from any others that are also having this experience.

I just had a look and it’s up there alright. Go to the link that I sent you earlier and scroll down the list and you will see the RED 3.0.4 update for Windows that you are looking for. It’s the second item from the bottom of the RED section.

Wow … sounds odd – RED obviously should not be behaving like that. Are you using the latest updated version? Can you please send us the project setting from RED? We don’t need the media, just the project setting. We’ll then apply this in an Avid timeline to see if we can reproduce the issue. If we can repro the issue then we can fix it. Please send the project to us at support@borisfx.com along with a description of the problem. You might want to zip up the project file before you send it.

Hi Mike,
Are you making a 10 second black video slug or a 10 second video clip and applying the Graffiti effect to that? If so then the Graffiti effect when applied will absolutely be 10 seconds, as it is always the length of the media to which is was applied. When you are in Graffiti, what length does the duration numeric entry box display? It should show 10 seconds.

The missing filters will be added to FX 9 but as to exactly when is difficult for me to say. We have to add the code, then rebuild, retest and post. As soon as we can fit this into the schedule we will take care of it. I wish I could offer you a specific date for this but I cannot. All I can say is that it will happen sooner rather than later, if that makes sense. I’ll make a posting to this forum once we have made available the release with the missing filters.
I agree with you in the fact that write-on appears in the manual for Graffiti and FX is a mistake that should have been corrected by now. The same write-on effect can be achieved without using the write on command – it just takes a little more time and effort. I’ll bring this to the attention of the documentation staff – thanks for bringing this to my attention.
The presets which Steve Oakley made that were added to the product line initially were intended to be included in the RED, Graffiti and FX products however we couldn’t include them for FX. The web site text was made before this fact become known and we never got around to removing this as a feature. I’ll ask the webmaster to make the change to the site. Thanks for pointing this out.

Hi Joan,
The versions that you have of the Boris products do not support the extended drag and drop feature that you are looking for. This was added to the product line for this year and is available in FX 9, Graffiti 5 and RED 4. To use it you select several clips from any folder on the desktop and then drag these over into the timeline. When you release the mouse and drop the clips into the timeline, the media files all appear as new 3D Plane tracks. Alternately, in RED, you can drag these files into the project window and then drag them from the project window into the timeline of any comp – RED supports multiple comps in each project.
Regarding the shortcuts – the select all shortcut is for selecting all tracks or elements in the composite and does not apply to the keyframes on the track. Additionally, there is no way to select keyframes across tracks – you must select keyframes on a track by track basis. To select multiple keyframes, you select the first one and then hold the shift key and select the last one. All keyframes in between the two clicked keyframes on that track become selected.

Hi,
I’ll need a little more information before I can offer an explanation for the result that you are seeing. What are you applying the Boris effect to – a video clip? If so then what does the clip look like before you apply Boris? What Boris product are you using … RED/FX/Graffiti? Where does the media that you are compositing come from … a folder on the desktop or the Avid timeline?
