This is a known issue with the software and once you reenter the FCP timeline from RED the spin and tumble that you see should disappear.

I’d like to help you with this. It may be that what you are trying to achieve is not something that the filter was designed to facilitate. The UpRez filter was designed to scale clips while minimizing the loss of quality in the image to which it was applied, so I think it should work but before I commit to that I’ll attempt to emulate the project that you are working on to see if indeed we can use the filter to generate the result that you are looking for.
I’ll send more info with the results of my testing in a bit.

It should work as expected but because CS3 was released after RED was released there is a possibility of a version mismatch. I’m having this checked for you right now and will provide an answer for you as soon as the test results come in.
If you want to test this for yourself, you should use the 844/X install option and when it asks for the plug-ins directory, you should navigate to the AE 8 plug-ins folder. I tried it in AE 7 and while there is a “Global Flags Mismatch Error” message when you apply the RED effect to a clip, this can be ignored (click okay) and then the filter works as expected.

If you’re using BCC AVX and you want to use the alternate back function and apply geometric changes to the clip, then I suggest that you perform the geometric changes (crop and scale) using the Avid resize tool and adding the BCC Page Turn after you resize and crop the clip.

Hi Dave,
The Sequence settings in FCP determine the PAR so you’ll need to set it to HD to see the 16:9 aspect ratio. I just did that and it looks fine. Also, I rendered out from AE using Animation compressor and they too require a re-render after import into FCP (on the G5 machine that I am using) so I am of the assumption that this is a codec issue. Perhaps someone else that may be reading this might be able to shed some light on the issue.

Hi Dave,
Regarding the issue that you describe where you import a 16:9 movie from RED into FCP but it needs to be re-rendered, this may be a setting within FCP that wants to re-interpret the imported clip with a different codec. We can look into that for you and see if the problem is unique to RED. We’ll also investigate the 19:9 – 4:3 issue that you also describe here. Perhaps this is also controlled by an import setting within FCP – we won’t know until we give it a shot here.
Do you have the Better Quality Field Rendering option enabled in RED? It’s located in the Project Settings window under the Edit pull down menu.

If you are using Boris RED this is a piece of cake and very easy to accomplish, however if you are using BCC then the solution to this problem is a little less straightforward. Before commenting on a solution, can you tell me which application you are using please … is it RED or BCC?

If you are a Windows user then the current version of Boris RED 4.1.5 will operate as a plug-in within Adobe CS3 After Effects and Premiere Pro. We are currently working on extending this support to Mac CS3 After Effects and will release a patch update when this becomes available.
In addition to this, the Boris RED application will also operate as standalone on either platform, meaning that you can create the title that you need in RED standalone, render out to Quicktime or AVI (or any of the other supported format) and then import this into After Effects.
