While RED accepts 3rd party After Effects plug-ins there are a couple of caveats.

There are two install options with RED 4 – Universal Binary for MacIntel or Non Universal Binary for PowerPC. These options relate to the processor in the machine that you are using. Older Macs are equipped with the PowerPC chip, while newer Macs have the MacIntel chip.

If you use the MacIntel version of RED then only MacIntel (Universal Binary) compatible 3rd party After Effects plug-ins will show up and operate within that version of RED. This version of RED can be used within either MacIntel or PowerPC hosts.

If you use the PowerPC version of RED then any 3rd party After Effects plug-in should show up and operate as expected. This version of RED can be used only within PowerPC hosts.

If you are on Windows then this is a non issue.

Another issue is with OpenGL. Because of an OpenGL compatibility issue between RED and some host applications, we do not ship OGL effects with RED 4. You can however download and install BCC 5 into RED 4. BCC 5 includes 10 OpenGL based hardware-assisted filters (including the Lens Flare), which will operate in the RED standalone version but may have compatibility issues when used within a host environment.

If you can’t find a 3rd party filter that you have installed into RED, then try opening the Filter Palette in RED and type the name of the effect. If it compatible with the version of RED that you are using then it will be displayed in this palette and can be applied from the palette to a comp or layer.

Go to the Effects Tab in the FCP Project window.
Twirl down the Video Filters group.
Twirl down the BCC5 Distortion and Perspective group
BCC UpRez is toward the bottom of this filter group (they’re sorted alphabetically)

While RED 4 can certainly handle audio, and there are visible / scrubbable waveforms in the timeline, they cannot be rendered through to the comp window, and therefore they cannot be exported from the application.

Thinking about this, how important would this feature be to the general user group? If it’s something that a lot of users feel is important then it’s something that can be moved further up the development wish list.

I think the best thing for you to do is to download the latest trial version of FX 9.1.5 and see if that operates as expected within the iFinish system. There are no guarantees because this is not an officially supported configuration but it’s worth a test.

Hi Mike,

The answer is yes, but you’ll have to do a little compositing to complete the effect. First, duplicate the clip so that you have three copies stacked over each other. You should then use the Linear Color Key to isolate the reds on the top layer and the blues on the middle layer. You should set the key filters to composite inverted alpha on both layers. Then apply the HSL filter to the bottom layer and set the saturation to -100.

I’ve not yet checked the podcast but I’ll take a look at it and see if there is something different that may cause this to be the case. I’ll try to get to that this afternoon and will post another message once I’ve gone through it myself.

It may be that when performing the anamorphic scale that we need to use the scale parameter to generate the expected result as opposed to using the pop-up but aain, I’ll know for sure when I’ve had a chance to go through the podcast this afternoon.
