Well in order for the effects that you generated using BCC 3 to become available in BCC 4, you must install BCC 3 on that system as well as BCC 4. Then you promote the BCC 3 effects from AVX 1.5 to AVX 2.0. Then the plugs will work with BCC 4. You can uninstall BCC 3 safely once you have promoted all of the BCC 3 effects from AVX 1.5 to 2.0.

I recall your post and the short answer is that we do not have any current plans to re-bundle any of the Digieffects filters with our products. The deal that we had was with the previous owner of the software, which has since been sold and taken over by a new owner.

Hi Ron,

Here’s something that I’d like you to try. After you reinstall RED 4.2 using the Universal option, open one of the legacy timelines that you have which contains a RED 3 filter and see if the effect comes forward into RED 4.2. If so then you should be all set. If not then I’ll walk you through duplicating and renaming the filters.

Hi Ron,

There should be no need to manually uninstall anything – just run the installer and reinstall RED 4.2 selecting the universal option. Then duplicate and rename the filters per my last post and the 3.0 projects should migrate forward. The only thing that cannot come forward from 3.0 to 4.2 are RED 3.0 Static Generators.

Well you are in a bit of a problematic situation, however all is not lost. This is what you must do:

• reinstall RED 4.2 and select the “Universal” option in the product installer

This will make RED 4.2 compatible with your system set up. This will not enable the legacy RED 3 projects to move forward though, to make that happen requires additional work. You must duplicate the RED 4.2 filters and then rename the duplicates as RED 3 filters. Once you do that this will trick FCP into letting the projects come forward.

I’m glad to hear that you have decided to look at BCC 5 as a potential effects solution for the hosts that you use. I’d like to help you understand some of the things that you are seeing while working with the Pan and Zoom filter. And by the way, have you seen the built-in PDF help and tutorial system that is installed with the BCC software? You can access this system by clicking the help button which is located at the top of each filter in the product. This action will launch Acrobat and display the PDF file for that particular filter. And now on to the answers for your questions:

(1) You note that when you move the position point in AE the region of interest moves in the opposite direction. This is known and unavoidable. We suggest that you click anywhere within the region of interest in the comp window and simply drag the whole box as opposed to moving the center position point. You can also scale and rotate the box using the on-screen controls.

(2) Although the Pan and Zoom filter does indeed function in the same way in all hosts, each host API has it’s own set of rules that plug-in manufacturers are forced to follow, which means that while we have full run of the on-screen controls in some hosts, others do not allow for this. This is what you are seeing when you compare the use of the BCC Pan and Zoom filter in AE and in Premiere Pro. In AE we are given on-screen controls for everything however in Premiere Pro the API does not currently allow for this and therefore all transforms must be done using the parameters in the effects control window. The functionality of the filter is identical in both of these hosts, however the user interaction differs between these hosts with AE giving the user on-screen controls but not Premiere Pro. In both hosts if you use the parameters in the effects control window to control the pan and zoom the user experience is identical.

Hi Dan,

The most likely cause of the problem is that the filters did not correctly install into RED. To install the FEC filters into RED you must follow these instructions:

• launch the FEC installer
• select modify
• uncheck FEC 5.0 for Adobe After Effects
• check FEC 5.0 Custom Install 16 bit and also FEC 5.0 Custom Install 8 bit
• when you see the prompt for a directory for the 16 bit filters, point the installer to this location: C:\Program Files\Boris FX, Inc\BorisPlugins4Common
• when you see the prompt for a directory for the 8 bit filters, point the installer to this location: C:\Program Files\Boris FX, Inc\Lib

When the installation is complete, relaunch RED and the filters should show up and operate as expected.

Hi Sergio,

The text effects that you mention are only available as text effects and cannot be applied to a picture element. There are other things that you can do though to mirror that effect.

For instance, if you like the jitter that you have applied to a text element and need to apply that to an image element, you can use the motion tracker to track the jitter in the text element and then apply the tracked motion to any image element(s). Details on use of the tracker can be found in the built-in RED electronic help system. Alternately, you could use the Jitter filter that is included with RED, applying the filter directly to an image element in the RED timeline and then tweak the Jitter filter parameters to match the movement of the text as closely as possible. Or ou could apply the jitter filter to a container and place the un-jittered text and image tracks into the container – the advantage being that the text and images will all share the same jitter effects with the least amount of work.

Type-on animations are a different matter and is strictly a text only effect. You can change a letter for an image element (and to do that you must first convert the track into a container), however, once you replace a letter with image media any style animation, such as jitter, is lost for that letter.
