So does the light stroke have to follow the contours of the cross or just fly around it in 3D space?

The easiest approach might be to create a paint stroke, animate the stroke so that it moves in time, and then nest the stroke on the face of a 3D object, like a cube, cylinder or a sphere.

Hi Michael,

Adobe Premiere CS3 on the MacIntel platform is for all intents and purposes a new host for us and we’re still in the process of weeding out a couple of problems, such as the problem with OGL that you have encountered on your system. Some of these issues can and will be resolved by us but others will have to be fixed on the host side of things.

The latest version of RED is 4.3 – the first step for you will be to download that version and install and see if that resolves the problem. If not then I’m going to have to refer this to tech support.

I don’t know why this is happening and I doubt that we’ll be able to resolve this in time for your deadline so in the meantime I’d suggest that you do the work in the RED Engine, render a result, and then import the result into the FCP timeline. I know this is not a resolution for the problem that you describe but you really need to contact tech support for that – it’s just not something that I can help with. You should contact them via email at support@borisfx.com.

I wish I could offer better advice but I have nothing better to offer than what I have listed above. John from support can assist you in resetting your system as it sounds like there is some sort of installation issue which is causing the problems that you are seeing.

How bizarre – I’ve not seen this behavior but I’ll report it to engineering to see what they can tell us about it. Are you on the Windows or the Mac platform? Are you using RED standalone or as a plug-in?

That will do the job alright – or again, you can use the Jitter Basic and just select one of the presets and tweak from there.

Hi Matt,

Are you using the latest version of Boris? Perhaps that’s the issue. What has changed in your set up from when this worked well to now, where you are getting these out of memory errors? Sounds like you have a new machine – and the latest shipping version of Avid. First thing I would do is to make sure that you’re using the most up to date version of the Boris software – what Boris software are you using … RED/Graffiti/FX/BCC/FEC? And what is the exact version number (including the decimal point number) of this software?

While you might be able to create such an effect using Graffiti, you would be much better served by attempting this in RED, which offers more tracks and will make generating this composite a much easier task.
