Hi Peter,

Boris RED is a 3D titling and compositing package and can be used as a standalone compositor or as a plug-in to most editing systems. There are many tools in RED that are not in BCC, such as the Extruded Vector Trace tool or Raster and Vector paint tools or the built-in 3D Titler etc etc. While most users do not have a problem with the RED UI, there are some folk that prefer to remain in the interface of the editing system they are using, such as FCP or AVID. For these folk, the best solution is BCC. There are about a dozen filters in BCC that are not included in Boris RED, such as Pan an Zoom, UpRez, LED, Damaged TV etc. The reason that these filters are in BCC and not RED is that RED includes the BCC 4 filter set, while the current version of BCC is 5.

So … why get the MGP? It includes the (substantial) feature set of the RED 3D compositor/titler plus the ability to remain in the host user interface for speed and ease of use.

Hi Dan,

Yes indeed you can. 🙂 Here’s the workflow:

• launch RED
• set the project size to the desired final rez … HD for instance
• clear the timeline – no tracks
• import the clip to be uprezzed as a new track
• apply the uprez filter directly to the video track

Hi Ben,

This is most odd – I’ve never heard of this problem before and am not quite sure what to tell you in regard to finding a solution. What is interesting though is that the paragraph justification feature is a non-animatable parameter and for it to jump as you describe is really strange. Have you contacted Apple support about this?

What is the duration of the titles that you have created where this issue is apparent? If they are longer than a couple of seconds, try cutting them into shorter segments to see if that helps. Is the problem something that you can replicate at will? In other words, is there a definite series of steps where this happens? If so can you please make available that information and we’ll take a look to see if we can reproduce this in house in our labs.

Sorry to hear that you are unimpressed with the results that you are seeing while working with the BCC filters in FCP. I’d like to see if I can assist you in achieving more satisfactory results with this set up. To do this we should probably be working with the same files so if you would like to send me a text based graphic that you have had trouble with then I’ll work with it for a bit to see if there is some way of improving the result.

I’d like to start by asking you to generate a very stripped down FCP file that illustrates the problem. Perhaps you could generate a slug, or use a solid colored graphic on V1 then place the text graphic on V2 over the slug/solid and apply a BCC filter that shows the problem. I would suggest that you avoid using a graphic with a drop shadow as it’s always better to add the drop shadow in FCP.

I’ve just reproduced the issue that you are seeing on the MacIntel – looks fine on the PowerPC version. I’ll bring this to the attention of engineering and see about getting it fixed asap.

Okay cool, thanks for passing this along. I am using a PowerPC Mac and that might explain why I am not seeing it but you are. I’ll move over to one of the MacIntel equipped machines and give it a shot to see if I can reproduce the issue.

With the change from PowerPC to MacIntel Universal Binary support as lot of things changed, including the color bit processing order so it may be that this is the cause of the problem.

Hmm … well that’s odd. I have seen this issue in the past but am not seeing it on my system. Are you running the software on a PowerPC based mac or a system equipped with a MacIntel processor?

Hi William,

Currently we do not have immediate plans to release an AVX version of BCC Units but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will never happen. If the demand is great enough then we will certainly offer the BCC Units product for that host but currently the product is only available for AE and FxPlug host targets.
