You can use our SmoothKit product ($89.95), which has a Gaussian blur that doesn’t bring in black at the edges.

SmoothKit has lots of other options for blurring, smoothing and sharpening (including features that allow you to blur without blurring over edges, etc.)

We have downloadable demo versions. SmoothKit’s page: https://www.revisionfx.com/smok.htm

[Jack@TheFoundry] “If you’re looking to only affect a particular part of the image use the matte as a trackmatte to laer the moblurred part of the image over the original.”

So what you are saying is that there are two options:
    1) matte the original object and motion blur just the object and place over the original footage. In this case, you’ll see the motion blurred edge over the original non-motion blurred edge of the object after the composite is done.
    OR
    2) track matte after motion blurrring, in which case the motion blur will not affect the edge of the object being blurred.

FYI, Our ReelSmart Motion Blur Pro ( https://www.revisionfx.com/mblur.htm ) allows you to apply a motion blur to each of 2 layers individually (using a matte, just like TimeWarp). In the case of applying motion blur to the front object only, RSMB will first fill in the hole in the background automatically, blur the front object and internally composite the blurred front object over the filled-hole background. Note that this creates a different kind of artifact (the filling process is not perfect either 🙂 ), but often produces a less objectionable result. Your mileage may vary.

If you still have your Twixtor 1.4 key, it will unlock Twixtor 3 too (but not Twixtor 4).

You can get Twixtor 3 from “old versions” downloads page: https://www.revisionfx.com/rstwixtordownloadsOldAE.htm . Upon installation, you’ll find the manual on your disk.

Note that the tracking in Twixtor 4.5 is MUCH MUCH better than in Twixtor 3, so you may want to consider upgrading (not trying to hard sell you, but v. 4.5 does produce much nicer results).

I’m guessing you are having a problem for one or both of the following reasons:

    1) you need to be working in a 16 bit or floating point project. Many times an 8 bit displacement map does provide enough information to prevent aliasing (or what you call pixelized)
    2) AE’s displacement mapping does not provide any form of filtering. It just does a simple pixel “look up”. This is a know limition of AE’s displacement map filter. You should try our RE:Map product ( https://www.revisionfx.com/rmap.htm ). RE:Map has a displacement map filter that does the proper filtering. Like I suggested with AE’s displacement map filter, you’ll probably want to work in a 16 bit project.

RE:Map also has a corner pinner that provides proper filtering (along with many other features that AE’s does not), a UV map filter (takes a rendered UV map from a 3D program and renders with any texture you provide) and an auto-distort plugin that distorts images based on their features.

  • [gfx_diva] “I don’t have the Re:Map effect on my machine, but have put in a request to get it installed”

Keep in mind that you can use the demo version until you know it meets your needs (that may or may not be obvious, so I thought I would say it out loud). The URL for RE:Map is here: https://www.revisionfx.com/rmap.htm and the installer page (which will install a demo if you do not have a registration key) is here: https://www.revisionfx.com/rmapdownloads.htm

  • Ignoring the distortion for a moment:

Is there a rectangle *within* the 4 corners that you CAN see within what you want to replace? If so, our RE:Map has a 4 corner pinner that allows you to extend the texture past the 4 corners that you are tracking (and can, then, extend to the corners and edges you cannot track because they are offscreen). This way you can track sub-rectangle within your billboard, but replace the whole billboard even as edges and corners go offscreen.

As to the distortion… you might want to do the following: undistort (using AE’s reshape or the warper we have in RE:Flex), corner pin, then distort back. You know when your undistort is working properly (or at least “good enough”) when straight lines in the real world (such as the edges of the billboard you are replacing) should map to straight lines in the image you are working on in AE. I don’t suppose you took a reference shot with something that can help you define the distortion of the camera lense? If not, the edges of the rectangle of the side of the truck should suffice. If you perform the undistort on one frame, then the undistort will pretty much be good for all frames (since you said you have a locked-off shot). Then you can corner pin, then add the distortion back in (or, more appropriately, just re-add the distortion to the texture you are using to corner pin and composite back onto the original live-action).

Hope this helps. Let me know if anything is unclear.

July 26, 2006 at 10:32 pm in reply to: Plug-In will not import into AE

    Bobby,

Not sure what you mean by “will not let me import into AE.”

You don’t import the plugin into AE, you put the plugin files (those ending in .plugin on Mac and .aex on Windows) into AE’s plugin folder.

Nor does this plugin give you a different “import” option within AE.

After you put the Twixtor plugin into the plugins menu, and restart AE, the plugin then shows up in the Effect menu (under the RE:Vision Plug-ins submenu).

You put some footage into a comp, then apply Twixtor (using the menu item Effect->RE:Vision Plug-ins->Twixtor 4.5.

You are going to want to set the input settings of Twixtor to have an input frame rate of 29.97 and the appropriate field order (probably Lower Field First). Then you can simply set the speed to whatever you like (for a 4x slowmo, set the speed to 25%). Of course, if you are extending the footage you’ll need to read this: https://www.revisionfx.com/auxdocs/ExtendDuration.htm

Please read the manual that is put on your disk with the plugins upon installation. It will explain quite a few non-obvious things! Then, when you are done with that, you can go to our tutorials page for more help ( https://www.revisionfx.com/auxdocs/ExtendDuration.htm )

[TimothyBright] “Is there some sort of plug-in that would work withthe GraphicConverter application???”

No, there isnt’. At least not from us.

The only thing we have for Mac OS X is an After Effects-compatible plugin that works with After Effects, combustion or Final Cut Pro.
