Now breathe. You definitely have options.

First: FieldsKit works with either setting of “NONE” or the appropriate field-separation set in AE’s interpret footage. Our older versions required you to set the interpret footage to NON.

You can do what Pierre suggested, but you can also do the following: set the footage to it’s appropriate field-ness in AE’s interpret footage. Drop the footage into a 59.94 (or 50) fps comp. That way you can see all fields, deinterlaced. Then you can key and then apply FieldsKit (making sure to use the =1 Frame per Field, 2x FPS setting), or you can apply FieldsKit first and then key. Whichever works for you and gives you better results.

Our SHade/Shape can help you do that. it’s $89.95, and can “environment map” a 2d image onto your text. With the proper texture map you can make it look like metal.

After looking at the footage, here is what I determined (an my proposed solution):

I believe the footage was shot in 24P, but saved on tape at 29.97i, because that’s the DVCPRO50 format description (which is what you said on the list that you had on tape).

Panasonic adds “advanced pulldown” with that camera I believe. With puts the first frame on 2 fields, the second frame on 3 fields, the third frame on 3 fields and the fourth frame on 2 fields. So 4 frames becomes 10 fields (or 5 vidoe frames) This means that every 24 frames will be put on 60 fields (run at 23.976 and 29.97 fps, respectively).

Which means that if you have frames A B C D in the original 24fps (really 23.976), then on segment you sent me you have
AA BB BC CC DD (where each letter is a field on video).

[SSGGMM] “FieldsKit looks good on a first, clumsy try. But the render keeps crashing. I’ll keep at it”

First: We’ve had no report on FieldsKit crashing AE, so if you have a good replicatable example, we’d like to get our hands on the project + footage. You can write to us at techsupport (at) revisionfx (dot) com.

Okay, I’ve been waiting to weigh in here on this topic, because I’m still a bit confused as to what you have (and it sounds like you are confused too 🙂 ).

It SOUNDS like what happened was that someone captured 24 (23.976) fps footage onto 29.97i tape, with some kind of pulldown added (either added upon capture, or added in-camera upon shooting). And then that footwage was digitized at 24 (23.976), so much of the original footage info is missing as a result. Does this sound correct?

If you can send us a 20- or 30-frame clip at the same email address as I listed above, perhaps I could help shed some light at what happened to your footage and whether or not FieldsKit, or Twixtor, or both are relevant to helping you fix the problem. It would be best if you sent us a section that has a lot of movement within it (which makes it easier to figure out what happened upon capture).

Depends on how blurry is “too blurry”.

You can try our ReelSmart Motion Blur which uses motion compensation to add motion blur, but the plugin can also remove motion blur (if it’s not too extensive). Of course, trying to remove motion blur from an image that is really blurred will have the same problems you have unsharp masking an exceptionally out-of-focus image.

Why don’t you give the plugin a try: https://www.revisionfx.com/products/rsmb/ There is a free demo version in the “Downloads” subsection for the plugin. Also, make sure to read the short manual that is put on your disk with the plugin upon installation.

I’m guessing that the 6x time is about right, but I don’t know what your settings are.

if you set the Timing Mode to “=1 frame per frame” and set the Fill Method to “none” and Detect Motion to “None” and Smooth Vertically to 0.0 and Sharpen to 0.0 you should get results that are about the same time to compute as if you didn’t apply the plugin at all.

Of course, those settings do nothing (so I’m just trying to gauge if you are having a problem with Premiere Pro and our plugin with those settings).

And no, the trial version is not compute limited in any way.

We always recommend working in layers when objects cross. So your intuition is correct: create a separate object + vector pass for each layer.

Why don’t you try the demo of our RE:Flex?

    https://www.revisionfx.com/products/reflex/

There is a demo installer in the “Downloads” subsection. Make sure to look for the manual that is installed on your disk with the plugins upon installation. There are also sample project in the Support subsection (and these assume you’ve read the short manual).
