March 16, 2012 at 10:33 am in reply to: What exactly is a field mixer?

A field mixer will be generally RUGGED design. Meant for taking a bit of punishment. Usually metal cased. Has pro metering, tone generators, means of providing audio to external devices by a number of output routes and varying levels (such as mic level and line level at the same time by different outputs. it will have facility for monitoring control, allow listening in on any input, have adjustemnt for mic types on every input separately, sich as dynamic mic, phantom 48v, t12, etc etc
The mic pre amps are a key consideration when working at a high spec and this is where the money goes. Pro users will spot the difference as will the post production chain.
    They are expensive (good ones)

  • MC6 has exactly the dragging around function youre asking about.
Personally, the differences between FCP and AVID in real terms are very slight. The buttons change shape and some of the terminology changes, but by and large the way you edit and story tell in both is much the same.

    This is interesting.

Am I right in thinking that externally created avid HDxND files (say from resolve lite) would fast import.

    Yes.
When you started talking at the beginning of the video I thought “what a tight crisp solid mic sound that is. I cant see the mic. Then you revealed the face mic.
    Good job

Yes im not worried about renerd time as i leave a final render of everything overnight. what i hate is flickering images. I cant even cope with progressive as its too flickery.

Great video Ty. I think a lot of people will get valuable info from that.

I only wish that youd also had the camera mic running to your mixer to let people hear how terrible that would sound in contrast to your 4 pro mics.
    Good job

Just a thought. Your poor audio levels couldnt be caused by out of phase audio in mono could they.
Drop off 1 channel and pan the remainder centre. Still a problem, then its just plain quiet.
    Re sacking.
Any boss who sends out a gfx designer to do a sound engineers task without the necessary back up and training needs sacking himself. hes ultimately culpable as he made the crewing choices (wrongly).
Solution. If you survive (and im sure you will as i dont think hell be able to hear his arxxe from his elbow) make sure you tell people clearly when youre being asked to do tasks outside your training, skilset knowlege etc so they know that youve tried to steer them. Then if it all comes crashing down, they know they created the monster.

Post a sample of the problem audio so we can download it and see if we can help out.

IF the audio was recorded to timecode sync then yes it will be at the 23xx fr. But if its just a wild recording then its hours mins secs and tenths / 100ths, not base 25 or base 24 etc etc.
if you play audio at the wrong speed youll hear it stright away.
what are you using to re unite the pics and audio. make sure the sample rate and bit depths ate correctly matched 1st. this will cause drift.
