    Ahh
See Id have presumed, that, as the sound devices is a portable / field recording unit, he was using G3s that are the portable type (I dont think her ever said) rather than base station types which yes will have a line op. The g3s in the Uk that are portable type (non mains) are mic level op, hence the confusion.

Yes that’s what I meant-using the correct switching on equipment to match the level type (mic /line)
Not cranking a mic signal way up to use a line input.

    Hi Eric
Well I’ll admit that I didnt know that, but thats not so surprising as my background is fairly well documented as being in a post prod mixing environment primarily.
That said, I dont think id ever do it, as i prefer to run any element in a chain without over pushing it or under subscribing it. Just how I was taught, but I didnt know it would work.
Does the sd device not have switchable line / mic input sensitivity electronics making the need to pump out higher gain un necessary?

You cant put G3s into a line level input. Theyre mic level devices so the signal is @40db lower than line level. There will be a switch to go between mic and line level on the inputs.

April 16, 2013 at 10:01 am in reply to: TWO shotgun mics – ONE location?

    HI
Im not suggesting you use a stereo setup as those diagrams are showing. Record as dual mono, but yes the diagram shows how `id postion the 2 mics if they will stay put!(dont move)

I like the lavs in addition, as they have a tight pickup pattern and will serve to PIN the signal well, as the rifles will by design have more of the off mic sound from the other performer. More complex to rig and record I know, but thats what Id do.
Ultimately it is in the dub / mix where you create or eliminate the off mic material from your mix.

    Hi
Well youre right not to rely on the zooms onboard mics. Theyre really not up to much and have very little reach.

If you use 2 shotguns to sep record tracks, you only run the risk of phase cancellation if you leave both open together and mono them.
Id record the 2 separately to the zoom split track, and then mix them “bulldozing” the faders gently so that only the best, nearest is up and the other is decreased (not off)
Make sure the cables you use for both mics are the SAME length.
Id position each mic just out of shot NEXT to each other but pointing out over (triangle shape) but only if the performers are to be fixed in position.
If they might move out over a little (apart) then go for 2 positions wider apart pointing in over.
Be clear that phase cancellation only happens in mono and when both mics have a fairly equal value in the mix. Avoid this and you will be fine. LISTEN on cans in MONO to check phase id good.

Personally Id want 2 lavs on them also to PIN their position in the mix, but if you havent got lavs and arent going to get them then ?

April 14, 2013 at 9:27 am in reply to: Weird Looking Waveform

Im inclined more towards a recorder front end overload rather than a mic issue.
The waveform of the @good audio@ is nowhere near what would cause issue, but if the recorder gains were on the edge then it could well cause something like this.
Also check things like, there wasnt some incorrect powering going on on a device connected, like 40v being fed to a device that doesnt want it.

April 12, 2013 at 10:43 am in reply to: Media Composer to Media Encoder Workflow

I can confirm that Ive been unable to export a qu ref from a seq containing Long GOP media or AMA linked media.
    Which brings forth a question.

I once had a long seq that had a single frame of AMA media left in it by accident, but this was enough to stop me being able to export the qt ref i needed.
Is there a way if having AVID show / highlight / identify any AMA media from within mountains of non AMA media?

Im sure Marianna has helped hundreds of AVID users with problems and complications over the years – me included more than once.
She is a real asset to the AVID community, and its good to say thank you every once in a while!!
Im sure she’ll be way too humble to pop up here, but she should know that we really appreciate her (often background) contribution.
