Yes I suspected as much, but as for Opteron, the Supermicro with CPU’s only cost US$650 so the Opterons were just out of reach. I figure I’ll stick with this setup until the quad-cores appear in a couple of months.

Go for a KATA camera glove. They are much softer (neoprene-type fabric) and look way cooler (black to match the camera) then the Porta Brace cover.

When I do use HDV footage it’s often in a mixed standard-def DVCPRO50 project so I just capture the HDV footage by changing the capture settings then using the 10-bit rendering in the SDI project. This is not ideal for editing (because the HDV clips have to rendered just to watch them), but it does keep the graphics and titles clean.
Being able to import/capture with the SDI Decklink and monitor with the new HDMI card would be great. Let us know if you find out any info.

I’m confused about the blurb for the Intensity.

Are you saying I can go into the field with my Sony HC1, shoot HDV then capture into my PC with Intensity at full uncompressed HD rez? I thought that once the HDV video was shot, the long-GOP compression damage was done. How can Intensity make the HDV-captured video any better?
If you mean it captures only live video out of the HDMI-equipped camera, does that mean I have to lug a workstation/server to location to plug in a domestic camera and capture uncompressed? Such a scenario would be limited to indoor event videos or rostrum camera work where you can be close to a Intensity-equipped PC. Not very realistic.
Can the Intensity operate alongside a standard Decklink in the same PC to allow monitoring to a HDMI monitor or can only one BM card operate in a PC at a time? Now that would be useful.

Still, if I wanted to buy this camera now and get a playback deck a few months down the track, what would be the problem of using the camera as a playback device? I have a PRO50 studio deck in our edit suite and I could rewind the HD tapes in that. Without doing any shuttling or pauses on the 900 transport, I could use the camera as an interim measure while I acquire funds for a 1400/1200 deck. Some of us can’t afford new edit decks and cameras all at once and for light continous playback into into a NLE, I may have no other choice in the short term.
I’m more interested in the quality. What sort of downcoverted SDI output am I going to get from the 900? Will it be worse than a studio deck DC?

The 2/3″ version is a definite, it’s just when that is indefinite. IBC is on Sept 8 – 12. Whether they make an announcement at IBC is a moot point. I would like some direction as I’m waiting to see this camera before making a decision on HD. But if it takes too long I may jump into the Panasonic HDX-900 or P2 variant. The other hope is that Sony doesn’t price the 2/3″ XDCAM HD too high. I’ve heard prices will be in F900-arena which will be an absolute strike out for me if true. Others with Sony contacts have mentioned prices in the high thirties. Damned pain the whole thing. Worse than the NLE world! ;-(

I always go for the latest driver. If you have problems, uninstall and go back to the older drivers. But I can’t ever recall having problems with NVidia drivers and Premiere, and I often use the hacked drivers to overclock the GPU and memory. Am you can bet they sure aren’t certified!

I would expect that because of the shorter record times at a 50mbit rate, Sony would wait to bring out the new 50gig discs with a re-designed cam-drive for the 2/3″ XDCAM HD. There should some announcement on something at IBC. I would hope so anyway.
