I use CS5 and FCP on my 2009 Mac Pro and I’ve just bought a Macbook Pro 17″ to edit on trips. The Macbooks are definitely under-powered compared to the Windows laptops, but I can use FCP if needed and I keep font comptibility with my agency clients.

That would be cool, but I thought Panasonic were not happy with the downrez quality of the 1080 chip in the 3700 and never implemented 720 in that camera. But it would good as long as the new camera doesn’t have a 3700 price tag. A 2/3″ camera doesn’t stay on the cutting edge for more than two years anymore, making it very hard to keep up with Jones’ (and the bank manager).

I’ve actually switched back to CS5 (Mac) Carl because of the rendering speed of Mercury and other suite integation reasons. But I still dabble in FCP.

BBC still has the 27H on the approved list (thanks Keith). We use the 2700 all the time and it’s probably even better.

The following cameras are presently approved by the BBC.

When I import directly from the deck into an AJA Kona Lhw, the 25P and 60P are correctly pulled down. the 60P plays back automatically in slomo in a 25P timeline. I have to ingest via FCP and it’s a bit messy with the setups but it works. I used a Nanoflash which records the 25p correctly but the sound is not in sync. I would love the Nano guys to fix this.

I have a H-series Varicam which I’ve been trying to sell Keith. It is a great camera to work with and not having to backup after a shoot is great. I’m sort of re-considering buying a HD1200 or 1400 deck and staying with the 27. It’s nice to know the BBC is still using the 27H. Hard to know what to do…

I switched to FCP last year from Adobe, but in the last couple of months I have cut all my major TVC’s on CS5 (Mac). The CUDA/Nvidia thing is just so advanced compared with FCP’s ATI alternative. In CS5 I can play even complex multi-layered sequences through my Kona (albeit stuttery if I have too many layers), but I can’t play nearly anything on FCP without having to render. The Mercury rendering means I am finishing projects MUCH quicker than I was with FCP.

I’m just weighing up whether I trade up to the new Mac Pro or get a HP Z800 and go back to Windows. I do love my Mac Pro, but Apple is really losing my interest with Final Cut and the hardware.
