I agree the existing manual is a great resource… and MUCH better than the one for Resolve 7 or Resolve 8. I guess I thought that one of the industry leading color grading systems would have a manual that is current and without any obvious errors.

Most of the other professional software packages I use have a correct and complete user manual (thinking about Avid, Smoke, and Final Cut). Maybe Blackmagic needs to allocate more resources to this professional tool. (we are still waiting for a keyboard shortcut list right? (why did they change them from Resolve 8 I just don’t know)).

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for the suggestion. That did the trick. Got the timeline loaded and ready to grade.

I think the problem is that the user manual is actually incorrect about this point. It says to import the EDL using the ‘Import AAF/XML/EDL’ command. But that doesn’t work (tries to link to source media). When I used the ‘Import Preconformed EDL’ it worked.

Anyone know how to let Blackmagic know where the manual is wrong? I actually found another error in the manaul about linking an audio chase track to a timeline (It says to choose ‘Link Audio Chase Track’ option.. but that option does not exsist in Resolve 9). I assume we would not contact Alexis directly right?

Thanks Joseph for the info. I guess I still don’t know all the inner workings (on non-workings) of quicktime, but your description makes sense.

And yes Chris.. I would love to have all the color reviews happen in the bay with me, but many times that is just not possible (clients in other states/countries, multiple clients who work all over town and can’t coordinate to all come into my bay). You never have to send a file to a remote client for approvals? I’ve had to do it quite a few times and Resolve/Quicktime is not making it easy for me.

I have done Prores quicktimes from our Mac Resolve and those always look correct (or at least close) when viewed on a computer screen.

But these H.264 files from the Windows Resolve are just not usable. Again I would love to not have to send quicktime files for review, but it’s a necessary evil and I would love any suggestions about how to get my clients reasonably color accurate files that they can use to review the color work.

Hi Peter,

I have tried to cut a few different shots up on V2, but whenever I turn V2 off (to reveal the shot below on V1) it will flash to the offline reference, and sometimes will ‘stick’ on the offline video reference. It just does not cleanly switch between the source clip on V1 and V2. Other times it seems to get ‘stuck’ on black. If I hit play, it will suddenly switch to the proper video in the timeline.

Can this be looked at and see if it can be improved. When reviewing VFX shots it’s very difficult when it will flash to the reference and not the the shot on V1 (I don’t want it to go to the reference. I just want to switch between sources on my record video timeline).

Should I send an email describing this issue?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the message. These quicktimes that I am rendering out are for color reference for my client. Basically my question is why do H.264 quicktimes look different than DNxHD quicktimes that come from the same Resolve system and timeline?

All these quicktimes are being viewed on an Apple imac using Quicktime player.

I am just wondering why these various quicktime outputs from Resolve look different when all viewed on the same computer using the same quicktime player. I totally understand how they can look different on different computer screens… but all on the same computer screen?

Thanks for the suggestion Robert. I did try to change that setting (although I don’t know why the offline reference video would pop up on the video output when I am monitoring my V1 and V2 tracks in the timeline).

I tried to have it on ‘offline’ on ‘source’ and I even loaded a black clip into the source side and set it to ‘source’ mode. But the offline reference would still pop up when I changed the Video track monitoring.

I hope they can make the AAF workflow more flexible. We render out as target mode so don’t really relink back on the Avid side. And we also still need to be able to link to camera media in Resolve even if the Avid timeline was linked to ‘offline media’. Don’t know why they won’t let us do this!

Thanks for the suggestion. But our VFX vendor is rendering out the final shots just as DPX sequences. Avid won’t take the DPX sequences without converting which makes more work for us. It’s so much easier for me to bring in the DPX sequence and update the shot in Resolve. It’s not a huge VFX show (only about 30 shots) so we are setup to just manually bring the shots into Resolve.

So for me, Resolve is unnecessary limiting our workflow and adding more time to our entire process. Rather than adding more UI changes (some which seem unnecessary) I wish Blackmagic would focus on making workflows more efficient and better for their customers.

But that’s just my experience. Don’t want to sound so negative, but I just feel that they are not really listening to us and working with us to make the software work better.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for the quick response. I wasn’t sure if you guys forgot about this one. I hope you can let them know that it’s still a big issue and makes the Studio 2 card not nearly as multi-functional as it seems like it should be.

I usually try to check the readme files for the new updates.. will the fix be listed there when the are able to address this problem?

I do hope this can be addressed soon. It’s not just a minor annoyance but it stops us from being able to use this card at all.

Hello Sarah and Joshua,

I wanted to follow up on this bug that you guys found with the Decklink Studio 2 card. In that I can’t get video out to my Plasma (via HDMI) and my HD-CRT monitor (via Component) at the same time. I was on version 9.5.3 at the time and have updated to the newer versions of the software (I just tried 9.6.5). This is still a problem. Is this something that can be fixed? If not, the Studio card will not work for me at all.

Can you please let me know the status of this bug?
