Trouble with Resolve Exports
Hi,
I think I ran into this problem before, but still having the issue on 9.0.2. Not getting consistent color levels when exporting quicktime files from Resolve.
I exported a number of different quicktimes today and tried many different settings. Pretty much every export had different luma/color levels on the exported file. Quite depressing for a color grading program. I know that quicktime is not a great format, but it’s obviously the standard at the moment (unfortunately).
I tried to export a H.264 quicktime. I tried the ‘Auto’, the ‘Legal Video’ and the ‘Full Range’ setting for output levels. None of the outputs matched what I saw in Resolve on my calibrated video monitor (Pro Panasonic Plasma from my Decklink card).
While I know that computer displays do not match video displays, the difference was stark. A dark scene that was very visible on my plasma was ‘gone’ on the imac watching the exported quicktime. The black levels were so low and buried I could not see the scene. Even if I turned the imac brightness up to full. That does not see right.
I then did a quicktime export using the Avid DNxHD 115 codec (set to ‘auto’ output levels). This quicktime did not match ANY of the previous H.264 exports, but it actually did look the closest to what we saw on the Plasma in Resolve. So that is what I went with.
My question is why were the luma/color levels so inconsistent and why could I not get a usable H.264 file out of Resolve. That is the most common request from clients when they want to see my work in progress (and when they are not in town to sit in the bay with me).
Can this be fixed so the output levels from Resolve are at least close to what we get on our Plasma video display.
I am on Resolve 9.0.2 and Windows 7.
Thank you very much,
Peter
