I agree with Bob. Error logging… or even showing the luma and chroma values (think a status display) would be very helpful.

But even more basic than the error logging.. we need to be able to customize the display. I don’t need to see the audio screen, and I really need to be able to zoom into the vectorscope.

Hopefully Blackmagic will really make this product a much more useful tool in 2010!

You know Bob.. sometimes your posts are helpful. And sometimes they are not. We are all just trying to wade through this sea of technology and make everything work together. Your post doesn’t add any useful information (other than where to get the cheapest video card around).

I was trying to ask the experts here what the differences were between the cards (when it comes to the Ultrascope). Blackmagic puts out the system requirements, but there are ALOT of different graphics cards out there. They say ATI, but there are many different companies that build cards with the ATI chipset. So I was wondering is some work better than others. Also if 512MB vs 1GB made a difference for our application or DDR2 vs DDR3. Is the Ultrascope very resource heavy and it needs a ton of fast graphics ram? That’s why I’m asking.

The cards that are listed range from $1600 – $60 (yeah I found one cheaper than yours!). So I was looking for some information on how the Ultrascope would work better with the $1600 card vs the cheaper one.

Nick was nice enough to suggest a card that is working for him. Sorry if I am trying to find out more technical information and not wanting to spend more money on a card that possibly won’t yield me any additional performance from the Ultrascope.

Which cards are the higher cards? Can I tell just by looking at the model number? Are there any specs that are more important than others? Maybe not max memory but something else? Clock frequency? PCI version? I don’t know too much about these high end graphics cards.

I get the fact that the G5 is EOL. I am trying to learn FCP and color but not make a huge investment right now (work is hard to come by for me lately). It’s like $1400 vs $3500-4000? Some of the stuff I am buying can be re-used… the hard drive array (and drives), the HD monitor. Plus I could re-sell some of the stuff when I do upgrade to a Mac Pro…. the computer still works nicely as a computer.. and people are still using PCI-X (it does do like 800-1000MB/sec. doesn’t it?). Hell, I’m still using my PC every day (as a Media Composer system, digital picture workstation, DVD/blu-ray authoring, etc) which only has AGP and PCI (I’m talking pre PCI-X).

But yeah as I read of the limitations of the G5 (is there anyway to convert RED files to uncompressed HD on an intel PC?) I wish I had a mac-pro. But it was either the G5 route.. or nothing at all (for now). I wanted to experience what everybody has been talking about on the Final Cut Pro/Color side.

Thanks for the feedback Bob. Are you saying that I won’t be able to get the 300MB/sec that the product manger is quoting me, or that the newer cards/systems will get even higher data rates? I plan on spending what I have to spend to edit uncompressed HD (whatever that amount is), but I don’t see why I should spend more than is necessary. Really… 3 SATA’s striped together will work with uncompressed HD?

Thanks Arnie for the info. I did get a feeling that the SansDigital setup would be more robust and reliable. I was not familiar with the infiniband interface. Would you say that is better than eSATA but not as good at fibre? Would you say that a rating of 300MB/sec is sufficient for HD 10bit Uncompressed work (4:2:2 mostly).

I am looking very closely at the Ultrascope. Just off the top of my head… I’d love to see:

The ability to select which screens to display. I like to have 4 views on my screen (and thus they are a little bit bigger). I don’t need 6 displays active at the same time.

I’d love to be able to zoom into the vectorscope (can we do this?). That doesn’t seem too difficult and would make it a lot easier to see the detail.

I would love to see some alarms on this scope system. Or at least a readout that shows the current values for the currently displayed video signal.

These additions would make this product very very tempting. (I didn’t see a place where I could send these comments directly to Blackmagic)
