  • I figured it out. Here are the steps I was missing (sharing for posterity):

    1. Create a P Pass node in xpresso
    2. Create a PDeflector node in xpresso
    3. Hook them up
    4. Make a cube
    5. Make it editable
    6. Drag it onto the PDeflector node in xpresso
    7. On the deflector node, set bounce to zero
  • For perpetuity: I think I’ve decided to go with a cylinder object cloned along the spline using a Cloner set to Object with the Spline dropped in the object field. I’ve nested that all under a connect object and it seems to be working out okay though the edges won’t be quite as smooth as they could be. If anyone else has other suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

    That looks really sweet; thanks for the tip Walter! For the time being I think I’m going to split my animation into separate presentations and see how well that works for my purposes.

    Hi Tomas, thanks for your help! I’m not too terribly afraid of CLI commands, so maybe I’ll do some digging and figure out how to do this with aerender.

  • Thanks Greg. I’m aware of that feature. Do you know any way to apply one stroke that appears behind all of the objects without precomposing? I have about 10 objects as independent layers, and all of these layers are in a composition that’s pre-composed in another comp where I’ve applied the layer style > border to achieve the effect I want. But I’m trying to export this all to a .svg animation (for use in a web application) through Bodymotion which is somehow not picking up the stroke on the parent composition. I have asked other folks about that part of it.

    So this question is really about whether there’s another way to achieve the same effect through different means that might make it through the export process. The other method I’m exploring is combining all of the shape layers under one shape layer and applying the layer effect to that layer instead of the pre-comp.

    I figured it out. I needed to go into the composition which has the Illustrator layers and check the little sun box on each layer in order to “continuously rasterize” them. That made the edges smooth.

    One followup question: when I put the animated composition (which is a collection of layers from Illustrator) into the parent composition and apply a stroke layer style to that pre-comp layer, the edges are jagged. Does anyone know how to avoid this? How do I get rid of the jaggies?
