I also saw this real quick at NAB while walking past the Adobe booth. I think he used 3 3D layers with Fractal Noise applied and likely add or screen (or perhaps multiply) transfermode and 20-60% opac. The Fractal Noise effect can have Evolution keyframed to make some motion on the clouds/fog. The 3 layers are organized with same X,Y pos but spread on Z. I think what really sold the effect was the quick camera moves like a handheld and the parallax effect it gives.

We have an example showing Shine/Fractal Noise in a kind of related way, but not the same – only one noise layer:

I really like this fire! Could you post the AE project here? I’m sure others want to see it too. If not, please send to peder (.at.) trapcode.com

If you have Trapcode Shine you could try the “Electric Tutorial”:

Make sure the Lux layer is topmost in the comp.

[Chris Smith] “That’s it in a nutshell.”

Hey, stop reverse-engineering our stuff!! 🙂

Hehe, that’s a pretty good description. If you don’t want to get into Maya you can do similar things with Trapcode Particular inside AE: Use a Light Emitter and set “Velocity” and “Velcity from Motion” to 0 and you will be able to “paint” by keyframing the 3D position (3D motion path) of the light. Now, the “Size over Life” curve can be used to create tapering (and other exciting shapes). Note: keyframing the 3D motion path works so-so; you need to hit “purge” every now and then to get accurate rendering.

This is because you are using an old version of Shine. Get the latest here:
