I saw this done at NAB at the adobe theatre. I’m looking to create volumetric smoke in a small room type situation. I know it was done using a solid with fractal noise applied. Along with levels, blending modes and opacity. Have been tinkering around but can’t get desired effect. YES I searched post to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Its Fairly easy to make volumetric smoke in Cinema 4D by using a emitter [emitting] a light with soft turbulance. search the web for tutorials on smoke and cinema 4d, or other 3D apps

I would like to do it in ae with no plugins. I know it can be done. I saw the guy do it in a couple minutes.

Maybe with the render>CC Light Burst effect applied to an adjustment layer? Make the Fractal Noise layer 3D.

It’s a kludge, but what the heck.

I also saw this real quick at NAB while walking past the Adobe booth. I think he used 3 3D layers with Fractal Noise applied and likely add or screen (or perhaps multiply) transfermode and 20-60% opac. The Fractal Noise effect can have Evolution keyframed to make some motion on the clouds/fog. The 3 layers are organized with same X,Y pos but spread on Z. I think what really sold the effect was the quick camera moves like a handheld and the parallax effect it gives.

We have an example showing Shine/Fractal Noise in a kind of related way, but not the same – only one noise layer:
