[jake blackstone] “And while we’re at it, all HUE tabs should be reduced to just one window, with a switch for Hue vs Hue, Hue vs Sat and Hue vs Lum. That is how it’s done in all other apps, like Baselight, Lustre and Nucoda. And there is no need to have hue display on the bottom of the tab. It should be the part of the display itself, with control points for 6 vectors. This way, if you want to adjust hue of Red, you just grub that control point, no need to guess where it is, based on the display on the bottom.”
There’s a reason why Blackboard, Precision panel and Lustre panel have wacom tablet + pen built-in on their control panel. Changing Resolve’s GUI to be more like baselight/lustre/nucoda, in my humble opinion, is a BIG mistake because the way DaVinci’s control panel works is totally different.
If you want to adjust the red hue why you need to guess where the red color is? You only need to push two buttons on the panel.
Speaking of DaVinci’s control panel, the menu layout on the LCD is changing dynamically when we select different nodes and the GUI also changing when we select some tools directly from the panel. So let say you do a primary balance in the first node and secondary in the second node, when you switch between 1st and 2nd node, the menu layout also switch between primary mode and Qualifier mode. But some tools never appears on the menu layout until we select it from the soft pots manually.
I don’t know about you guys over here, but it’s more than enough information for me to know what I’ve done in that node. But that’s just me, I’m not a colorist. Maybe a real colorist who doesn’t have the panel will need more than that. But I also never saw someone work on baselight/lustre/nucoda without their panel before.

[jake blackstone] “Unfortunately your grasp of the subject discussed is not quite there, so I think, that you need to sit this one out. Even you should know, that If you don’t perform a dynamic transition, than the display you’d shown is meaningless for the purpose, that you’d assigned to this example.”
You should take a closer look at the left side of the dynamic timeline. Over there you should see all the nodes (labeled as corrector), inside the corrector you can see the tools (not all) on that particular node.
What you really want to ask to DaVinci guys is to make that list more powerfull or usefull for you. Maybe you can ask DaVinci guys to make that list auto-update whenever you use some tools or feature in a node. So when you use only NR in an X node, inside the X Corrector list it should only appear NR tool, so now everybody can see what you did inside the X node.
Maybe you can ask DaVinci guys to add copy and paste function so you can copy some particular tools to another node. Or whatever idea that you want. Just because it is inside the dynamic timeline it doesn’t mean you can’t use it for another function.

[jake blackstone] “Look at any other top notch color grading systems- Baselight, Lustre, Filmmaster. They all use layers. Do you think they don’t know what they are doing?”
Do you think DaVinci guys have no idea what they’re doing???

DaVinci Resolve have been advertised by BMD as a node based color grading software, so now you’re complaining that it doesn’t use layers?
A nightmare to use? The whole interface is counterintuitive and counterproductive? Seriously???

July 27, 2011 at 9:17 am in reply to: My first two weeks impression on Davinci Resolve and some questions.[Nook Kim] “1. To toggle grade on/off, do I have one stroke other than down-shit + Disable Current? I’m aware of the up/down arrows on keyboard. I’m just trying to eliminate visits to keyboard as much as I can.”
Under the Lift/Black control trackball, there are 3 buttons that have no function yet. I think DaVinci guys can make that buttons for this one-stroke shortcut.
[Nook Kim] “2. Can I have buttons for switching through different versions? When I want to compare version 2 and 7 on a shot, it’s time consuming to hit through Prev Version and Next Version. How about Current + Numbers on the Numeric Pad or something like that?”
You can try save your version 2 to memory A and version 7 to memory B and just switch between A or B memory to compare (that’s one push of a button). Or you also can use ‘Preview Mem’ to toggle the grades.
[Nook Kim] “3. How do I switch the sides on the reference still and the current grade in wipe mode? I’ve read through the manual about this, but it was a bit confusing since the button layout the manual refers is different to the actual button layout on the panel.”
On your transport panel there is a ‘Jog Rotary Control’. So when you’re in the ‘play still’ mode, you just rotate the jog control all the way to the left or right until you see the wipe move to the left and show up from the right or vice versa.

I did the same thing as you Vlad, but instead of using AE I bought the grain stock from cinegrain and use the three luminance only knobs to control the contrast. It looks more organic to me.
I also hope DaVinci guys will add this feature on the next update.

[kim krause] “i’m really laughing now…so if color is so crappy why would the davinci boys being trying to copy it?”
You’re really funny Kim.
The six-vectors already exist wayyyy before creativecow.net 😀But who cares anyway..

[Joseph Owens] “Eh?
Er… six-vector hue/sat secondary control was standard from the very first Renaissance. ????
So…. the more “sophisticated” the tool gets, the more simple, direct methods get dropped?
Am I missing something here? This sounds ridiculous.”The last time I used it (yesterday) the six vectors still there.
Although now instead of using individual knob for each color (like in the old 2K panel), you only have three HSL knobs for all the colors.
So you have to select the color first (there’s a preset for this on the Resolve panel so you don’t need to pick a color from the image) then change the HSL using the three knobs. Now the problem is: the six-vectors color preset (RYGCBM) only appears when you use the Resolve panel.
If I’m not wrong, you can’t load the six-vectors preset using the Wave panel or mouse&keyboard via the GUI.The real question is: Does the six-vectors in Resolve do the same thing as the Hue_Sat curve in Color? 🙂
I have no access to Color, so maybe someone can check this for us.Best,

[jake blackstone] “I personally really start to get ticked off of not being able to do a LOT of functions, unless I spend $30k to go with my $1k software.”
Some people spend $20K to go with their ‘free’ software 😀
