A ha – I didn’t realize the same were true for Apple Color but I got that about speedgrade. I just thought there was something inherent with colour grading programs

I mean with speedgrade, when editing text (i.e. naming a look) – you can’t even do a CMD+Ato select all the text.

Sorry, I think you’re mis-understanding me

A proxy IS render is it not? So Neither PP or AE need compute time based effects

To be clear – This is nothing to do with time manipulation

Also, I said that a clip replaced with an after effects composition inherently has poor performance in PP before ANYTHING has been done to the composition, EVEN when the composition has a proxy file attached to it

Do I need to tweak any media cache settings? Because if I take a clip in PP and “replace with after effects composition” and do NOTHING with it – the clip will not play in PP. Just the sheer fact that it’s an AE composition means that it will be laggy….

… this can’t be right – I must be able to improve my AE preferences somehow

The Hard drive is internal – SATA II and I guess it is a little full 360GB of a 400GB partition. It is the 1st partition on the disk btw. NOT on the boot. Footage is staying in PremPro and AE

It’s H.264 straight from the 550D though, so I’m not certain throughput is the issue but then may be it is I don’t know?

2 things I’ve noticed:

Unsurprisingly, a long clip on the timeline is easy to play back, but lots of short ones from different files is a struggle. (I’m doing a fast paced music video so there are a lot of cuts)

Surprisingly, playback seemed to continue for longer without stuttering with mercury playback set to software NOT hardware.

Perhaps the CPU is better at decoding H264 than the GPU?

I guess I’ll just have to try an intermediate codec to see if that helps. There’s sooo many conflicting opinions on this front. Adobe will have you believe you’ll never need to transcode every again and others seem to think this is a nonsense.

If that doesn’t work then may be the Raid array is worth a try

No, this is a pure camera/lens/operator issue. I’m just reviewing the raw footage, either using VLC as playback or premier. I’m not a FC guy

The image quality of slow/non moving people/objects could be improved, but is total acceptable. My actor running across the frame just looks hideously blurry

In my last test I used a monopod to hold still – no improvement over hand held to be honest.

Oh yeah – it working!

Pain to change all the clip settings, but worth it. Titles and credits are looking really good

Not only that, I’ve tinkered with the denoiser settings – found that by pushing the chroma offset and pulling the luma offset, I keep virtually all the characteristic grain, but loose this odd green and magenta tones that were coming through.

Well – yeah. Progressive segmented frame – That makes total sense to me. Why would it be true interlace?!

I tested the denoiser on progressive footage and yes it does work. However, it’s not so keen to play with the existing sequence. I’ve set the sequence AND clip Field Dominance to None, and quicktime video settings to progressive.

As I’m writing this… I see that the clip in the time line also needs to be changed to reflect field dominance none in the item properties>…format. I had been changing the footage in the project folder only – wrong

Is there a way to change the clip settings of each clip in the timeline on batch? It’s a reasonably fast paced music vid i.e. a lot of cuts 🙂
