Yeah that’s all good. This seems to only be happening on a CS5 converted project now that I look further at it. The project has been resaved/converted to CC and any instances of missing plugins were removed or added.
I’ve made some new identical projects from scratch and they seem to render just fine. So I’m good.

Weirdest thing ever to happen to me with X was editing a 1080/29.97 project and upon opening it the next day it was 720/25. Swear. No way I did it myself as I shot all the footage myself just that morning and I am definitely a “set project based on first clip” kind of guy. None of the footage was scaled. That’s what tipped me off. Why is this all zoomed in? Weird indeed. Never happened again. This was shortly after its release but I was using a Spring 2011 Macbook Pro 15″ so I certainly had the most modern hardware for the time.

Select all the 001 files and nest them. Select all the 400 files and do the same. See if that works.

Earlier this week (just for grins and field readiness) I cut a 45minute P2 piece working solely off a Western Digital My Passport 1TB USB 3.0 drive and had no problems at all. I was quite surprised. I didn’t cut it in FCPX though. PPro. But still, I was quite pleased with the performance. RGB Curves and Fast Color Corrector on every shot plus about 40 jpeg stills. Rendered all the audio out as .aiff and mixed and sweetened in Audition as well. I cached media files to LaCie Quadro USB 2.0, but I rendered out the final .MOV to the WD right next to the source footage. No problems at all.
I did this on a new 15″ MPB Retina. 512 SSD and 16 gig of ram. I have a 7200 rpm Seagate drive on a Thunderbolt adapter and the WD returns slightly better speeds on a Black Magic test.
Your mileage may vary of course, but USB 3.0 worked pretty seamless for me.
It’s a solid option from what I can tell.

Did you choose the sequence preset or let PPro decide for you? If you’re not sure just drag a clip onto the new sequence icon and let it set it up for you.
Funny, I’ve found AVCHD works more responsively in PPro than in FCPX. Though I’ve always run 16G of RAM and a 1G graphics card on my MBP. That and an i7.

I get what you’re saying about the programs. If that’s what you think is best for you then who’s to say different? But I think only talking about Creative Cloud in terms of the programs is pointless when you don’t consider the other features that come along with your subscription (and the things that are still to come).
You wanna get to the App Store? You’re gonna need an Apple device. You wanna get to the Creative Cloud? You’re gonna need a subscription.
