Some things to try, let the camera warm up 5 to 10 minutes, and white balence before taping, avoid video gain and the all auto settings.

I have a used HD-200U, recording to a Datavideo DN-60, works great, and so far I haven’t had the split screen CCD problem.

I bought a set of Accom D-Bridges [a 122& a 221] to do the same thing, I never did test them, HDV kinda happened, making SD gear not so attractive.

Innovision built a box also that did D2 to D1 conversion.

Yep, a 30 second commercial is actually 30 seconds now.
Back in the days of tape only delivery, it was usually 29secs or 29sec15frames, Etc. Now most of my spots are file based and 30 secs right on the beezer. Some Cable network spots don’t even touch black at the start or finish now. Some things come in from FTP, get tagged and go out, having never been on tape. And a lot of playback in master control is done from servers now. H264 and MPEG2 program stream and transport stream are replacing the Betacam SP and DVCpro decks. Geez has it changed since I started in ’87. =:)

Most people won’t even know what they are, especially the kids with the FCP systems in their bedrooms. I was a big fan of the format. . .
I had heard the Koreans bought up a lot of the D-2 vtrs back in the mid to late 90’s, I think Turner had to get Sony to help re-support their D-2’s, because they had all of the MGM library on D-2 tape, and Sony had stopped supporting the format. I worked at a PBS station in Bethlehem, PA that had 8 DVR-10’s in the late 80’s. I bought a DVR-10 and a DVR-2 portable and a bunch of tape stock off eBay, but I have to restrain myself now, Standard Def is done, I have gone into HDV now, what a difference! =:)

Hi April,
Since your using the Component in on the Aja IO from the Betacam VTR,
maybe different length cables are to blame?
Try a different Codec to digitize the footage, and it wouldn’t hurt to run a disk speed test on the Media drives.

You have a DVR-20, that’s so cool, do you have the SDI out option?
I own a DVR-10 VTR and a DVR-2 D2 portable, back in the day I worked at a PBS station that want big into D2.

from the AJA website, some stuff that Might Help….
1) Ensure FCP Canvas and Viewer zoom setting is set to Fit-to-Window.

2) Ensure FCP user preferences -> Audio Quality Playback is set to Medium or High s/b Low.

3) You may have corrupted FCP preferences and or POA cache file. Delete them from: /user/yourusername/library/preferences/fcp user data. Note: Close FCP before deleting these files. After deleting these files, FCP will prompt for a project setting and scratch drive.

4) Virus checking software ? Disable it.

5) Dropped frames can occur due to poor RAID performance.
Check the following:
a. Make sure drives are striped as OS Extended (not journaled)
b. If installed, check and make sure that the SCSI card firmware and driver are current.
c. If installed, make sure active SCSI terminations are lighting up green (differential mode) and not red (single-ended).
d. Slow drive: If you have four or more drives, create two RAIDS and test each RAID independently with 8-bit uncompressed. Generally the RAID with the slow drive will drop frames. With two drives, test each drive independently using the DV-50 codec.

6) If you have a PCI graphics card installed, remove it. A PCI graphics card is not fast enough for FCP. It cannot update the FCP Canvas/Viewer in real time during playback.

7) You may have a FireWire device conflict: for testing purposes, disconnect all FW devices from the computer. If you are using FW storage, do not use the native FireWire ports. Install a PCI FireWire interface card for the FW storage.

8) Your scratch drive may be incorrectly set (going to the internal drive). Go to the FCP system settings and set to RAID storage.

9) Ensure that your FCP project setup is correct: use the AJA Io easy setup to reset your FCP project:
a. Type [control] [q],
b. Make sure show all checkbox is checked,
c. Select a AJA Io easy setup from the pull-down menu.
d. Click on [setup].

10) Your RAID drive may be full and/or fragmented. Clean up by removing unnecessary files, archiving to another drive/tape, and re-striping drives.

If you have 3rd-party RAM installed, try removing it.

Hmm, Your running an Acer AND a ATI video card??!
Your lucky it works at all.
An HP workstation and a nVidia video card are usually what people run
Avid on a PC, best check the qualifed PC systems list.
Or just back rev, sorry I can’t be of more help.

The easiest way I have found it use a free utility called HDV Split.
You can get it here

Then import the file it creates from the camera.
I use Avid Media Composer Adrenaline 2.8 with this and it works,
plus you can convert the footage to Avid DNxHD codec.

You are correct, if you are a kid working in your bedroom, or a production house with one system,
FCP or Premiere, Etc. will do the job, if you are in a multi-editor environment where people have to share and collaborate, Avid has the edge on Workflow, and I capitalize Workflow to emphasize its importance. It can mean the difference in keeping on budget.
Avid has a Workflow model called an Avid “Hotel”, there could be 15 Xpress Pro/Media Composer off-line systems, they cascade to the 2 or 3 online Symphony’s, and maybe a single DS or Nitris for the real high end color correcting and effects and compositing.
Networks and big production houses working on episodic TV love this setup, several editors can work on the same show, and bust it out quick.

I started out in 1987 edited Linear [tape to tape], moved to non-linear on Media 100’s in 1997; Premiere and Discreet edit* in 2000, then Avid in 2001, for me Avid is the one. At my workplace I have an Avid Adrenaline, the other system over in the news department is a FCP 4.5, they have issues with clips disappearing and projects corrupting, I never have issues with the Avid, it just flat out works.

I have seen it too many times, a professional gives a group a virtual gift of their services because they don’t have much of a budget, then when the group finally has a “Real” budget, they hire someone else, usually a overconfident self-promoter who will screw the pooch [and them].

It’s kinda like the article I read on looking out for “tire kickers” and the slick newly minted self-titled producers who say “if you do this “on spec” or very cheap, then eventually there will be more business from us, then they use you and move on to the next company. SIGH, whata business!
