  • If one were to hand off a h.264 “master” file to another editor, some or many would say that is not a “pro” master format but rather a distribution one. Of course exporting to ProRes doesn’t make the original (h.264 in my case) any better but it might bypass a source of controversy.

    Thanks Jeff,

I’m on a Mac. Your answer makes me think I’m not really sure what Seq Settings mean. I know I want a 720p output and that all the source material is h.264 which I don’t think of as a “editing format” I just want a responsive timeline than when I go to export a master ProRes?) there will be no dibilitating gotchas

    Thanks

Good call Dave. For the last job the deliverable was a 4×3 mp4 for use in PowerPoint 960×720. So 1280×720 would have been satisfactory. 720p is probably a safe bet, just trying to hang on to all the rez I’m provided with to cover myself.

Still wondering “Would you select HDTV1080i then choose Field dominance = None?” is a fools errand or valid.

  • Thanks Rich, there is a lot to absorb there but I did want to mention a breakthrough – probably file under obvious. I’m so used to doing all my compression in Compressor that it did not occur to me to simply export from AE to an mp4. That seemed to work just fine.

The first attempt was to mpeg4 but I could not open that file on a Mac. I tried again using the h.264 AE present and that seemed to work fine.

Thanks again Brian, I got a friend to do a Save As into AE CS 5.5

The original model employed a mask reveal vs a fade on but I’m not complaining 🙂 this totally nails the vibe of the thing and I’m very grateful!

Thanks so much Brian, unfortunately I’m running AE CS 5.5

At the risk of being high-maintaince any chance you could post a version I can open in AE 5.5

    Thanks for your forbearance

Jonathan I just encountered what you described again (can’t do any edits), restart the application did not work. My master seq became edit proof. So I had to start a new seq and paste the contents of the uncooperative mstr seq into it and viola – I can edit into it again.

Besides being a tedious workaround – I seem to lose my renders and need to do them again

sometime in the first issue I described with titles, I could drag a title into a seq when the insert – overwrite buttons did not work

  • Thanks Angelo.

Thanks Jonathan, sounds similar – a restart did not seem to clear it up
