  • setting seq compression flavor to match source or not?

In an instance where I am working from a single source or uniform source, is it ever a bad idea to create a new seq that simply matches the source, as in dragging to the new item icon?

To get a little deeper into the Seq Setting selection, is this compression setting only about the creations of preview files and no more? That is – when you go to export – the only compression setting that matters is the export setting, what the Seq setting was… has no bearing? Yes?

Here is a specific example. Let’s say I’m working with a file I downloaded from Vimeo (h.264) and I want to shorten it. I made the seq using the technique above (simply matching the source, as in dragging to the New Item icon). Is there a downside to export “match source” in creating a master (that has no titles or gfx)?

Based on habit it’s tempting to want something like a ProRes master but not only is that *not* making the middling source material any better but probably making a bigger master file size that delivers no gain in return. Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul

If one were to hand off a h.264 “master” file to another editor, some or many would say that is not a “pro” master format but rather a distribution one. Of course exporting to ProRes doesn’t make the original (h.264 in my case) any better but it might bypass a source of controversy.
