Maybe I celebrated too soon. Testing it out on other Macs a few wrinkles… the first might be to be expected. I guess I can’t expect to see TC displayed in the “counter” or the regular Qt player (not Pro)?

On another newish Mac with Qt Player Pro 7.6.6 I get the TC fine.

The on an older Mac running Qt Player Pro 7.6.2 (OS 10.4.11) I only get 00:00 playing the same Qt file that gave accurate TC on other Mac with Qt Player Pro 7.6.6.

Is there a version cut-off where I should not expect the TC to read/work?

Solution – In the calm after the original deadline haze, I rediscovered what I had forgotten (since it’s been so long since I worked with SD). It would appear that making a copy of the Best Quality 90 dvd preset and making one change in the Encoder panel/Video Format tab does the job. The default has several parameters listed such as Aspect Ratio with a gear icon to the right that is greyed-out. Clicking that icon and making it black (vs grey) will in turn make the default 16:9 black instead of grey. That seems to be all that is needed to ensure that players will display the anamorphic source file I’m using Compressor to encode as 16×9. BTW I do the actual burn with Toast, no adjustments and presto. However it’s worth noting that using the default Best Quality 90 dvd preset with result in a squeezed 4×3 dvd playback. Do I know how this adjustment works “under the hood”… no, but it works.

A secondary question… does anyone know of a Mac dvd player app that can do the 16×9 stretch? I tried VLC, which will do the stretch but can’t see to deinterlace the playback and looks cruddy. (I ask because I can do a fast analog-out real-time copy to a Pioneer dvd burner that can’t flag for 16×9 playback)

I tried a suggestion of deinterlacing as I export from MPEGStreamclip and that made a *big* improvement. The dvd content that was lifted was an edit that involved white flashes as transitions. Though the above technique resolved the artifacts on rapid pans/tilts, there were horiz banding artifacts on these white flashes. Also strange is that if I were to apply a Boris swish pan on new transitions I created between clips prepared the above way (that looked ok overall)… these new transitions would have banding artifacts, go figure. In every such problem instance I had to go with the analog capture from the dvd.

So esp. thanks to Robert I have a work-around that works most of the time. Yet it’s puzzling that playback would look perfect out of the Avid on an NTSC monitor and yet freak (interpolation strobe-stutter artifacts) out in a dvd made via Compressor… even if I blew up the image to remove the dv blanking.

It’s a puzzlement but it seems the Compressor preset Best 90min dvd will tell a dvd player to stretch my 4×3 anamorphic video to 16×9. I had started work with a near identical copy of same preset which did not work. Followed by mild panic about missing deadline and resulting confusion.

This is great everyone, thanks so much. The need for video “slideshows” is a evergreen but a moving target as to new, innovative and hopefully classy ways of doing it in volume. (If that’s not a contradiction 😉

Using the Compressor iPad preset I ran this test. (attached)

Unless I’m missing something it would appear my 1/3 guess about tolerable blow-up (130% in DVCPRO HD seq) would be about right .

I have Compressor 3.5 but don’t have this preset, can one download these presets since it would seem Compressor 3.5 is still current?
