There are lots of ‘upper echelon’ high visibility profiling opportunities in future without targeting one of the top ten dying industries – the almost invisible (to the wider public) post production business.

Good summary, most likely spot on.

The defection to Avid or Adobe will only make an impact if all the defectors move to Windows and sell their Mac Pros to people who otherwise would have bought a new Mac or iMac. That would hit Apple’s bottom line.
If they stay with the Mac platform its win/win to Apple.

Most likely OS X 10.7.? or 10.8 is going to break FCS 3 and/or QuickTime 7. So the only way forward is to freeze the status quo for FCS workstations at this pre-Lion moment – which is what Apple has done.

The petition in 2008/9 over the removal of the FireWire port in the first unibody MacBooks was short and to the point, got over 18,000 signatures. and was successful – the port was reinstated in the next model to be sold.

The wording of this petition is long, rambling, confused/ill-conceived, and impossible for Apple to act on.
So it can only fail. Unfortunately. 🙁

This idea of an appropriately worded petition is excellent – Apple does screw up from time to time, but the FW example shows that Apple do listen and respond.
But this is not the one that will succeed. 🙁

Underneath the hood Apple is doing EVERYTHING differently, so the old concepts of QuickTime media and XML projects is totally GONE.

Here’s some of the new jargon 😉
Editing
AV Foundation uses compositions to create new assets from existing pieces of media (typically, one or more video and audio tracks). You use a mutable composition to add and remove tracks, and adjust their temporal orderings. You can also set the relative volumes and ramping of audio tracks; and set the opacity, and opacity ramps, of video tracks. A composition is an assemblage of pieces of media held in memory. When you export a composition using an export session, it’s collapsed to a file.

The management of the metadata for all these created assets is now held in an OS X CoreData database – quite unlike the project concept we have known.

How it all works out is work-in-progress – maybe it will advance further with Lion…

As Arthur C Clarke put it “all sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

With FCP X (and soon Lion) Apple has just EOL’d QuickTime, after decades. This is a game changer, so we should hear them out. Likewise XML for the project.

You’re old stuff won’t work in the old way no doubt – like say the typewriter, who has one of those nowadays 😉
